BA631 Athens to Heathrow Retimed.

Seems the BA631 from ATH to LHR scheduled to depart at 0800 landing at 1005 has been retimed to depart at 0240 landing at 0445 from 03 March 2020.

Whilst an 0800 departure is early the new departure pretty much means all night up and will it mean there and back for the crew cutting down on costs for night stopping.

Either way not the best change.

Pure speculation but I think itís slot sitting.

As one of the daily HKG flights has been cancelled up until late March they need to use the arrival slot at 4:45am. As pre 6am slots are some of the most precious, they donít want to lose it so are using it on ATH in the short term.

It seems that it goes back to an 8:00 departure from later in March.

would be interesting to see the flight loads on such a flight thatís literally the worst time possible unless they go for like 50 GBP a seat !

Athens is eminently B2Bable - easy transfer route back to the gate

If this turns out to be correct it is somewhat ridiculous. A whole load of passengers inconvenienced because of the inflexibility of the slot system to deal with the implications of Coronavirus.

And the only passengers on the flight will be doing mileage runs!

Unfortunately as itís a time change not a cancellation most passengers wonít realise that they can move to the later flight if it suits them. And plenty will have booked for March already.

It's a horrible change. I wonder what sort of meal CE will get... is there a category for 'after midnight snack'?

well if itís 60 EUR there will be takers. Most rich Greeks I know fly Aegean, if they are the same price Iíd say Aegean is better anyway.

the funny thing is in winter Aegean flies the morning flight to Gatwick, so thatís not ideal either! Looks like no easy flight out of Athens on the mornings, Iíve taken BA631 many times and loved the timing !

There are some similarly timed returns to Gatwick (ALC springs to mind on certain days where it's a 3am arrival back in the UK) Just a regular rest of day meal is served..

I remember years ago there used to be a night Athens and a night Larnaca flight - both of which departed locally at around 4am on a 767 and landed back into LHR around 0630.... Those flights were locally catered at the time and it used to lights out on departure for what rest you could get then breakfast served about 90mins out from LHR.

04.45 does look really strange.

its the sort it time youíd allocate to a Far East arrival or really early landing ex JFK rather than a piddling European route.
