Can a JAL Diamond member choose row 1 on a BA 747?

Dear all,

Not sure if JAL Diamond/ One World Emerald have access to these restricted seats.

My understanding is BA Gold or higher - this being the equivalent to One World Emerald. I don't even think One World Emerald status with another carrier would be sufficient so sapphire equivalents will definitely be a no-go.

If they remain vacant, these seats should open up for all at T-24 as on-line check in opens for your flight - regardless of status.

Sorry - miswrote in my OP. I mean JAL/ Diamond - OneWorld Emerald.

But it sounds like it still would not give me the golden ticket!

In case those seats were taken by anyone, it will releases around 72 hours prior to flight to everyone in the same cabin.

There seems to be some uncertainty about whether you need to be BA Gold specifically, or just OneWorld Emerald. I don't have direct experience because I credit to BAEC, however see these threads amongst others:

seat 1A in F on a 747 blocked?

747 1A/K - 'Blocked' or reserved?

Which contain confirmation that OWE can select 1A or 1K. Note however that each passenger must be individually BA Gold/OWE if you want both seats.

You may need to phone up for this one....

As I recall they open up to anyone a few days before the flight (at least they did for this humble silver member). But they are not as good as the seats behind them as they are further from the window - if you are someone who likes to look at the world!

I understood that they are available to OWE members at booking.

Follow up and conclusion…

I tweeted British Airways about this, and they replied that my status with JAL would unlock row one.

I then asked via Twitter if they could assign it to me, and then they reversed their original statement.

I called British Airways and they told me the real one was restricted to bassinets and will be released only the day before flight.

I called a second time and they told me simply put the seats on available.

I called a third time and they assigned me row one with no questions.

You’ve had quite a runaround, but well done on eventually getting the seats.
As a non-BA OWE, you should still be able to get 1A/K, as long as your OWE is registering correctly in the BA system.
