On many longhaul and quite a few short haul routes, BA simply doesn't offer one way fares in inflexible buckets. So you simply won't find an I bucket one-way fare to LHR to many parts of the USA, So usually buying a return is good enough to reduce the fare. Within that, yes from time to time you get situation where further reductions can be achieved with a BA Holidays booking due to the internal fare buckets used. And you don't need to make it a car hire, you could make it using 1 night stay flight schedule plus 1 night stay in a Hampton or some other low cost hotel. And I can't see a hotel being bothered by a no-show.

Haven't searched for T&Cs, but one thought entered my mind now. Is it possible to add the car rental to the end of the reservation, i.e. flying AAA-BBB (x days) -AAA and adding a car rental for n days upon arrival back to AAA? Anyone tried that?

We had to cancel a car hire in Malta 2 years ago, on the day we were collecting the car. Hire was seperate from our flights, so not a holiday booking.
Avis were helpful, thanked us for letting them know and said we might get a refund. Which we didn't. Neither was there a fine.
Whether it depends on the pick up point I don't know as I've been led to believe a lot of Avis depots at airports are franchises.
