Gold for Life

Once my most recent flights get allocated, I pass the magic 35,000 tier points.....so what exactly happens then?

In my experience, nothing, except when you log in to your BAEC account it will say “you have achieved Gold for life”. I didn’t get any letter, email, or CSDs laying rose petals at my feet on subsequent flights, but maybe others had a different experience.

Congratulations anyway, it’s still a nice feeling and I was glad to get there before any potential moving of the goalposts that would have been just my luck...

Interesting as I will hit 35,000 tps in a couple of weeks. I expect a congratulatory message but not much else.

Absolutely nothing happens, which is pretty disappointing.

Well there is no big deal when most go gold, so being gold for longer doesnt seem like it will trigger much.
Thats comes with GGL and then 100,000 tier points. Dont hold your breath for anything much at 200.000 though.

Seems a missed opportunity....... I too have been worrying that the goalposts would be changed to a higher number of tier points.
With or without fanfare I will enjoy not having to worry about retaining Gold (I dropped down to Silver for two years and I really missed the extra allocation of Avios seats for Gold).

Does the card get automatically reissued every year or do I get an undated card?

Surely something rather wonderful happens - you get awarded Gold status for life!

Do people really have such a fragile sense of self-worth that they need praise and recognition on such an occasion over and above attaining the benefit itself? What would you like - to be personally serenaded by Snr Cruz? Should BA hire a brass band to play a fanfare next time you check in at the First Wing? Should they take out a full page advert in your local newspaper thanking you for your custom and saying how important you are to BA? Why isn't the benefit itself enough?

I’m pretty sure I got an email from James Hillier telling me what a “fantastic achievement” it was, or something like that.

It’s a nice feeling to know if your travel ever drops down (change of work, sickness, financial problems, etc ) you’ll always be able to jump queues and use lounges.

I’ve often wondered if the 35000 wasn’t a bit low but I suppose it is more than 20 years as a “just” gold. In reality I suspect most people who have it have accumulated it much faster than that.

When I hit Gold for life on UA (reached at 1,000,000 flight miles), the purser found me back in economy (IIRC as we were clocking up the exact distance over Greenland with a glass of Champagne from First and kept me supplied with the good stuff for the rest of the flight.

I’m sure it’s a nice benefit, especially when worrying about TPs and Gold renewal becomes a thing of the past. I guess in most cases it’s earned by a mass of business flying funded by an employer/contractor, so it’s a form of compensation for all those days away from home. But does it really deserve any extra recognition?

In the last 12 years I’ve racked up 14,000 ... all leisure, as an OAP, out of my own pocket. Surely I should be able to double-count those TPs towards LTG?

Indeed, perhaps awarded lifetime points should be directly proportional to age/50 multiple so people approaching hundred earn t twice the rate (I am sure BA wont go bankrupt from this practice

When I hit 35,000 tps next month less than 500 will be business. That is less than the tps I earned before joining BAEC in 1996.

Slightly OTT, unless you reside in the DYKWIA thread!
A simple 'thank you for your custom' acknowledgment would suffice to my mind and a re-statement of what I can benefit from for the rest of time. In marketing terms it would be called "Post Purchase Cognitive Dissonance"....ie an acknowledgment that you (or your company) has spent a vast amount of money (and time) on BA and we need to justify your decision to fly so much on BA when there are so many (and often better) competitive offerings

I was hoping I would hit GFL before my 40th in 2021, but unfortunately I am averaging 2500 TP per year (business travel mainly, very few paid personal trips) and currently balance is 19385 TP.

I might consider a TP run for GGL this year but even then 5K is a stretch the following year to make up the 10K needed.
