BWI - Likelihood of LGW 777 continuing into 2020?

I searched for a BWI thread, but couldn’t find one. I will be travelling to Baltimore in mid January 2020 and flights currently show as 787-8. However, given that BA are currently substituting a LGW 777, what are the chances of this arrangement being extended? If so, I would likely choose the IAD 787-9 flight despite the airport being further away from my final destination.

Which cabin are you flying in? Bear in mind that these LGW frames have recently been refurbished.

It’s in WTP where I prefer the 2-3-2 layout and cabin noise/environment of the 787.

Oddly I was just about to ask the same thing - then saw this thread!

Although in to 2020, as you note, the BA228/9 service appears to be reverting to 787-8's, the 777's appear to be pretty well fully booked has has been on virtually for all flights over the past few months, - and with about 100 extra seats that the 777 provides over the 787-8.

Clearly the demand is there - and no, flights are not discounted to fill the plane. In fact on two my recent TATL trips I've flown out/back of/to IAD since the BWI flights were $100's more (nearer $1000 more).

Yes, that's my experience too. The IAD flights are considerably cheaper but, given that my destination is to the North of Baltimore, I favour the BWI option.

Looks like the 777 run will end with BA229/BA228 on 12/01/2020 - then back to 788 :-( shame... .

Looks like it’s being used on Dubai later in the month according the seat map in MMB for my flight.

I stuck with the BWI routing in the end, to avoid the longer drive up from IAD. I noticed that VIIT has continued to operate the flight, but the 788 has continued to show in MMB. In my case, I’m happy if the 788 is back on the route from Monday.

I flew LHR-BWI on G-VIIT last week in Club. The aircraft felt fresh, and had modern IFE. It looked packed to the gills in WT and WTP, although about a quarter of seats were available in Club.

December and early January are busier travels months, so it may be too much capacity for late winter, but now that BA have numbers on loads and profitability from a good stretch of 777 service on the route, perhaps we’ll see more larger aircraft in the future.

Indeed, looking at thebasource, G-VIIT has remained at LHR and is operating daily rotations to DXB on BA106/107. Is this in lieu of the planned A350?

BWI route definitely back in the hands of 787's - although bouncing around between 788s and 789s.

Friday's flight 'might' be a 789 - expert flyer has it as a 789, BA seat map is currently just blank (?), flight aware is a 788 out to BWI (so 788 return). Uhm... .

The impression I get is that it's more due to lack of trained crew on the type. There are actually enough frames at the moment to handle this route as well as the other 3 routes they're doing now. It is supposed to go back to an A350 at the beginning of Feb though.

789 on Friday's BA228... .

Flightaware still showing 788, expertflyer a 789. Before OLCI BA MMB showing no map, only that previously selected seats on MMB had changed to 'Seat choice available at check-in'. When OLCI arrived got moved (defo showing 789 now). Usually get an apologetic email from BA saying that seats had changed, but nothing this time... .

789 substitutions have been good to me over the last few months. Travelling WTP for business, then upgraded at OLCI. I’m 2/2. I guess BA keep 788s out of service awaiting new engines: substituting the other way round would involve a whole load of involuntary downgrades!

Thanks for this info. I checked MMB and found the A350 swapped to B777, but still managed to change the middle seat I had been given in lieu of the 1A. The flight is due in just a few days, and not a word from BA.
