Does BA Think I'm Incompetent or Just Plain Stupid?

I'm heading to the UK to attend my convocation this coming January and needed to find an award flight for my parents to get back to Canada. Whilst searching the Avios website for the date they need to travel I came across this doozy:

I'm new to booking Avios rewards but have never seen fees this high! What am I missing here?

Safe Travels,

James

I now see this:

Bizarre! Is BA's IT usually this glitchy? When will I know for certain what the price is? Now? When I hit the buy button? When I receive my credit card statement?

Safe Travels,

James

Yes, and now (normally), or on the final confirmation screen but I've never seen it differ at that stage.

The £41,330 fee seems perfectly sensible to me.

Alex will have warned his promotions team that those loss leader LGW flash sale fares must be paid for somehow ..........

Only off by a couple orders of magnitude, no big deal. In the grand scheme of the universe 400 and 40000 are probably pretty close

This is less glitch than usual if it actually allows you to book at any cost.
