Pricing ExpertFlyer fares vs BA.com

Hi all,

Looking at flight prices this afternoon and have a question about discrepancies between fares shown on ExpertFlyer and those on BA.com

I priced up a flight YVR-LHR in Y with outbound Feb 14 and inbound Feb 23 on BA.com, which prices at roughly $788 (CAD) with a fare of $117 + taxes/surcharges/etc.

At the same time on ExpertFlyer I can find fares as low as $90 return booking in O class (which is available on both legs). I'm curious as to why I can't get the flights to price with this fare on BA.com? I'm confused because I found these fares on ExpertFlyer for the exact dates, so not quite sure why they wouldn't be valid.

Cheers,
TUF

Edit: if I move the outbound one day to the 24th, then it prices at the $90 fare - but still not sure why given O bucket is available on both flights and I can't seem to find any other restrictions on the $90 fare that would be relevant in this case.

Check the restrictions of that fare. There might be 'O' fare available but it might have special conditions.

If you copy-paste the complete fare information here, I would be happy to check.
Also, don't forget to write the whole fare basis code.

Originating area 1 - a surcharge of usd 14.00 per fare component will be added to the applicable fare for travel.

[Edit: the above isn't your issue, it's simply BA's distribution fee for non-NDC agents. See my post below for answer to your Q]

Hadn't caught that. But still unclear as to why this doesn't apply for leaving on the Monday (Feb 24).

Cheers,

ITA Matrix -> Bookwithmatrix -> Justfly/FlightNetwork is selling that ticket.

However, when searching at ITA Matrix deselect the "Only show flights and prices with available seats" option and include F ..OLN8Z7B5 at both outbound and inbound extension codes.

Thanks for finding that, however still seems to price at $787 once you follow through. Honestly not too interested in being able to book at this price, but rather more curious as to whether anyone knows why it prices differently on Sunday/Monday even though the fares and availability are the same.

The reason you're not seeing it on the 23rd is because there is no O class on that flight using Canada point of sale on that date. That's why you can't find it on BA.com, since the website uses point of departure as point of sale. However if you use, for example, UK point of sale, there is O class on that date.

It reduces to 616 USD when you go to Justfly. ( via bookwithmatrix )
Flight Network does not work.

p.s. I originally read your OP as indicating you had found O class available on BA.com for the 23rd, but at a different price to that found on EF. In fact you weren't finding O class on BA.com at all but a higher fare class - in this case Q (based on current availability). You would have been able to see that by clicking on the flight details box at the flight selection stage, where it tells you the class being offered.

Yes that was my mistake, I mistakenly thought it was O because EF showed availability but it appears I was using a UK POS (rather than the actual Canada one).

Thanks again for the help!

I was not aware fare buckets quantities would change based on point of sale. So in practice, I being USA based can have my London-based daughter buy my tickets if we see an advantageous fare bucket scenario, as was evident in this post?

Yes, she can purchase you UK-based fares even when you originate from the USA.
Also, you could purchase the same tickets from an OTA with a co.uk extension.

Usually, the prices would be similar however, it might be cheaper to buy the same tickets via a UK travel agency on solely-US holiday seasons ( 4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc... ).

Yes, although you need to be aware that not all sales channels will use the UK POS inventory.

For example, if you buy a USA-UK-USA ticket on ba.com, that will always use US POS whichever country version of ba.com you select. However, if you phone BA in the UK and pay in GBP, then that should give you access to UK POS inventory. This is worth remembering if you get an unexpected result when you're trying to do this - persistence and flexibility can pay off.

No, this phenomenon has nothing to do with UK-based fares. It is simply availability/inventory being shown to different markets. The fares are the same US fares priced in USD, converted into GBP at the prevailing exchange rate used by the relevant channel. (BA's exchange rate is pretty good; that may not apply to all other channels.) All that is happening is that cheaper fares in cheaper booking classes can be used because there is availability in the UK market in those cheaper booking classes.
