Unhappy BA App: Annoying Log In Required When Searching for Avios Booking

Is it just my phone (Google Pixel 3) or does everyone have this issue: Even though I'm logged in in the app, when I go to search for an Avois booking, it's clearly taking me to BA.com mobile site and requires me to log in again.

Yes it’s been like that for years on apple too. It’s basically just directing you to a mobile format webpage.

OK glad to hear it's not just me, but annoying nonetheless!

I actually think it’s a good step, regardless if it’s intentional or not. I wouldn’t want my Avios balance being spent that easily. But clearly if you’re redirected to the web pages rather than the app then it will ask or request an login, which again may seem clunky but it’s a good security step.

normal booking looks nice on the app, avios search and booking directs to a webpage where you simply log in again (as above its like extra security)

reward flight finder might work better for you in the app where log on isn’t needed each time and you can scroll through the year if you don’t set a date range. Of course when ready to book at the end once you find what you are looking for... then you’ll be greeted with the log on screen

There is a misconnect between the app and the web pages. That’s why the log in appears when you click on something that ends up requesting a web page. It’s normal practice to ask for a log in to access pages that require a log in. Apps can be built with access to web pages (separate to the app) but if it requires access via a user account then it will ask for you to log in.

It may seem annoying/clunky or whatever but actually in today’s internet I’d rather we were asked for permission than just giving access to anyone, especially given BA’s records with data management or security.

Except on an Apple device the extra security authentication to access Avios search is by fingerprint (if you have that enabled) and when you pass that step it still asks you to enter your password.

So it isn’t design, like so much of BA’s IT, it’s just shoddy execution.

that’s a good shout, completely forgot that. Just checked Face ID and that’s worse, loads the BA homepage No Face ID loads the correct/usual page and exec id prompt

Ah yes, I was actually talking in the context of iOS (I should of said). Touch ID if enabled is activated once dates are chosen but then your email and password is still asked for. So yes not great implementation.

Correct. Just poor programming. This isn't a "feature".

It would be better if the additional login occurred at point of purchase. Currently, it forces a login when even doing a search. It wouldn’t be as bad if that portion of the app worked with password managers, but it doesn’t.

Bottom line: in app Avios searches are pointlessly painful. The “extra security” of the second login is down to shoddy execution and outsourced IT.

There is a specialist but separate BA Executive Club App, which can handle redemption searches and doesn't require repeated logins. Just the one on starting up.
