Being quite mature, I now have an extended family of business travelers (mostly longhaul J). Our joint and extensive experience is that BAEC will maintain the status once. And even if you are far from maintaining status. It's like a joker that you can get once in a lifetime. My guess is that it applies to non-UK based pax, as BA knows that they are not the obvious choice for longhaul or even regional travel.
