Good way to fly Beijing to Thailand on OW?

So I and the Boss (Mrs OGG Flyer) are going LHR-PKX in J (on AMEX voucher!). We want to pick up my elderly Chinese father in law in Beijing and continue onwards to Thailand on separate ticket. Reverse trip in return.

What's the best way to do the Beijing-Thailand route on a One World carrier so I can get TP's/Avios, if any? We have not decided yet which part of Thailand we want to stay (that is a couple weeks over XMax), so fairly flexible but would be happy with BKK and then we can take it from there.

We've done this on Avios booking with CX several times, and also on MH. However, given current issues in HK, I would probably find alternatives to CX.

If it's a cash booking, which it seems to be since you're interested in earning Avios, honestly, I would consider flying direct (e.g. on CA or TG), since it's far more convenient, and the distance isn't so great that it's going to be a massive earner for you. Direct flights depending on intersection with peak travel times can be expensive (but less than on CX most of the time!), so indirect from China (e.g. on CZ) can be extremely cost effective. The only major advantage of connecting is if you're NOT going to BKK or other major airport that has direct flights from BJ, since you'll need to connect anyway -- if you're very keen on OW and the the incremental cost isn't too great, would consider MH in that case (although their flight times from PEK are not that great).

CX, MH or possibly JL. Depends on timings

Quite frankly, this would be one of the better Star Alliance redemptions out there using A3 or UA miles in business rather than Avios. There is no direct OneWorld routing making it much more expensive using BAEC and Avios.

For cash bookings I have always found tickets originating mainland China to be excessively priced as well as hard to purchase from outside the country. Credit cards often refuse to authorise such purchases. As previously posted, your choice would be on CX or MH. Normally that would be a simple decision, but HK does seem dodgy right now and could potentially get significantly worse IMO.

If flying in J and TP maximisation is important, MH Malaysian airlines might be your best option. PEK-KUL alone will earn you 140tp instead of the 40+40 with CX. JL flights are usually quite expensive compared to other OW options in Asia

Id also say ow is a really bad choice for this. There are nonstop options that will be much better, especially with an elderly relative.

I personally would go CX (despite the current issues in HK) as they will offer you the most direct route there is on OW.
As someone else mentioned, if TP optimisation is a factor, then MH will likely workout as not only the cheapest regardless, but also best on TP earnings (same as JL, but they will be more expensive).

Hope you will have a good time in my adopted home country! Be conscious that Christmas time is peak tourist season though, and China is a big source market for Thailand - you should look into booking sooner rather than later

That said, TG direct would probably be the best option although obviously not OW
