Advice for cancelled flight

Hello all

Just informed that our flight back to London from Berlin BA987 19:15 today has been cancelled. We are fortunate, only my husband and myself travelling and we do not need to be back in UK urgently.

However, have not been in this situation before. Could someone give me some brief pointers as to what we need to do next. Can we book a hotel? Will we be entitled to compensation? Any pointers gratefully received.

Thank you.

The cancellations today are due to BA's own system failure, so you appear to be entitled to compensation under EU261/2004. There's a main thread about that you can find here: The 2018 BA compensation thread: Your guide to Regulation EC261/2004

This should cover everything you need to know.

That's most unfortunate.

I would recommend against trying to call BA as they will be experiencing extremely high call volumes. I'd recommend using the App/Website to see if you've been automagically re-booked on another service and, if not, to rebook yourself manually.

Should it be of use later on:

The "OPEY" text is most relevant. It means the flight was cancelled for operational reasons and the "Y" means that compensation is due.

BA should have rebooked you on another flight.

It looks like there's good availability on the 20:55 flight BA995 which looks like it's being operated by an A321 Neo.

At this stage there does not seem to be a timeline for resolution of the IT issue so I'd say there's 3 options:-

1). Enjoy a hotel at BAs expense and wait for them to rebook you (if you can get MMB to work you could rebook yourself).
2). Phone BA and ask them to rebook you on another carrier.
3). Phone BA and cancel, get a refund and book alternative.

of course 2 & 3 will likely mean a lot of holding as I'm sure the phone lines are rammed.

Keep an eye on it as that could also be cancelled (see the main thread regarding the issues today). Get a hotel lined up just in case, and book it straight away if the later flight gets cancelled.

Also the slightly earlier flight into LCY has a bit of availability and I believe (?) that LCY services are not suffering the same level of disruption - so IF the later flight is cancelled, and you can get to TXL earlier:

So BA0995 20:55 TXL to LHR has been cancelled too. Very helpful BA staff member on phone has rebooked us on flight BA0981 07:05 TXL to LHR tomorrow morning. Very glad we have a hotel reservation for tonight at the airport - thank you for the suggestion. Received some good advice: donít stay in a castle, but we will pay for a reasonably priced hotel. Donít order three lobsters, but you donít have to eat at Macdonalds either. Thanks everyone on this forum for all the help.

Stay at a hotel that suits you with respect to hotel status, and dont forget to claim EU261 compo.

Arrived back this morning, thankfully. Just processing claim for expenses and compensation. Claim for hotel plus meal plus additional airport parking is straightforward. Not sure about the compensation - can someone help. The original flight was cancelled. We were then rebooked for a flight later that evening. Then later that afternoon, this new flight was also cancelled and we were rebooked for the following morning. Can we claim for EU compensation for both cancelled flights or just the original flight? Thanks.
