Fully agree with this. While the loss of buddy dining is a small shame (although the A380 is really only the good buddy dining experience due to the size of each seating area), every other part of the new F is streets ahead of the old F.

We actually managed to do some buddy dining in 1k on the 77W in new First the other day, but my partner is quite small and it might not work for everyone

All the other -200s are now in either LGW-refreshed or LHR club-suite configurations. So 39/43 complete on the -200s.
Out of interest, which routes do the 4 777-200s left to refit normally serve?

Since May, it looks like they are doing primarily LHR-USA routes, including Denver, Miami, and Boston.

What about the 3 772s currently operating out of LHR, mostly to NBO, BGI and BDA, which aren’t listed for CS upgrade, namely VIIV, VIIW and VIIY? Will they be switching to LGW as services ramp up?

I just checked our SFO LHR October booking and it appears aircraft has been switched to the 777 with the new club suites. I am wondering if FT'ers who have been on this configuration have any opinions on 1A / 1K.... seating sites all warn against proximity to lav but seems like a nice seat with no one in front of you. Thank you

I speculatively booked a holiday to Orlando for my wife and two kids for this August (flying from LHR), all the way back in September last year.

We decided to splash out a bit as it’s the first proper holiday we’ll have had in a couple of years and I’ve been quite ill myself in the interim, so I decided we’d go business.

We ummed and ahhed between BA and Virgin, but in the end plumped for BA on the basis that at the time of booking the allocated plane was an A350 with CWS whereas the Virgin equivalent was an older product. Yeah, I know there’s never any certainty over such matters, but that’s the call we made.

I’ve been really lucky to fly business and first frequently through my job, but it’s not something my wife or young kids have done before. I was disappointed when attempting to book seats that the flights are now showing a 777 with the old Club World. Yeah I know it’s still business, but it’s not the experience I was hoping to show the three of them.

I realise that with refurbishments still ongoing that it’s not impossible CWS could be installed on our flight come early august, but at the current pace of rollout and the fact I’d assume that MCO is considered a less ‘prestige’ destination that it’s unlikely to be high on the immediate priority list.

Please do correct me if anyone has a more optimistic outlook than that, but that was at least my assumption.

Naturally, if that’s the case, there’s little I could do other than defer the holiday which I don’t want to do. My only other thought is that looking on Seatguru, the assumed plane configuration shows a small first cabin. I don’t know if this is accurate or not, however if it is I’d be keen to explore this possibility for the sake of my family.

However, I can’t get through on the phone to BA at all, and I see no option to explore this within the ‘manage my booking feature’ of the BA website. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

At present, the MCO route out of LHR is scheduled to be served by 1 of 3 legacy LGW aircraft with First which was refurbished just before Covid hit and LGW dropped First. It is still the old CW style, but has 14 F seats which aren't sold (MCO is not an F serviced route) but is used when CW is full as an overflow (with CW service). Anything can change over the summer in terms of aircraft types serving a route, but these aircraft appear to be sticking to just 3 or 4 routes where the extra 14 seats in F can be used as a CW overflow and the need to serve the route with a CS equipped aircraft isn't required vs. high prestige routes. I would suggest subscribing to Expertflyer and putting 2 alerts on your flights
1) For an aircraft change which may have CS seats
2) For F seats to open up (they do automatically between 72 and 48hrs before departure) and see if the CW cabin is full. If it is, grab the F seats and you should stick with them, if CW is not full however, it will be closed again and you will be kicked back to CW

Thanks for your helpful and knowledgeable post. I’ll take your advice re: expert flyer and see what happens. Just a couple of quick questions if you don’t mind:

1. Presumably If I were to try and grab F seats when they open up there wouldn’t be a charge associated with a F upgrade; presumably just the charge for booking the seats?

2. Is there any way (straightforward or not) to see how many seats remain in CW at any given time? Presumably not everyone will pay or have the necessary status to book seats?

3. Is this a well known trick?

Thanks!

I think BA may still be waiving change fees, so you might think about changing your routing to fly a route that BA prioritizes for Club Suites and add a connection to MCO. E.g., JFK, DFW, LAX.

I guess it depends on whether we see First Class again out of LGW. These 3 airframes don't seem to fit in anywhere with the long term plans, but I guess if BDA and BGI move back to LGW then I expect they would move with them.

Hi!
We're flying BA 281 LHR - LAX on august 4th, as of now it'll be an B 777-300 ER. Return BA 280 LAX -LHR on october 6th also B 777-300 ER. I know this can change. This will be our first flight in business (sooo excited ) and I'm really hoping for the new Club suite. Our whole trip is GOT - LHR - LAX/LAX - LHR - GOT
Is there a way to know before which 777 we're flying with so I can check if it's one of the refurbished?
When we picked our seats through BE the layout was of the new cabin 1+2+1, we chose 8 A (window) and 8 F (isle), are they ok? Seatguru were of no help here, they only had the old layout on every 777 and even BA said that seatguru were not updated.
Is it a fixed schedule so that certain planes are always used on the same route? Or is it decided a couple weeks before? I know there is a lot of logistics involved in planning schedules so that everything runs smoothly and it can also change on a dime.
We booked directly with BA and everything is on one ticket

Stepped off G -STBI yesterday on the 239, for an 8 year old plane, old first, it was filthy and shabby. Awful worn out condition and really grimey. Great crew but couldnt make up for the flea pit of a cabin. Not a patch on new first! Am now solely picking routes serviced by new first even if it involves a de tour with AA to get to my final destination

I had G-YMMR to YVR yesterday. Definitely a step back in time!
