I think it was an attempt at humour/humor!

Personally I don't tip in any lounge. Just as I don't tip the on board personnel, or the person who checks me in. By flying F you've paid more than enough for the privilege of being there (whether using miles, cash or a mix is irrelevant - it's all paid for to the airline one way or another). I'll tip the baggage porter - of course - but his service isn't part of the ticket.

I generally tip 3,000 Avios per drink, a GUF1 for a decent meal service, a GUF2 for a decent meal service for me and my wife, and a joker for anything else I consider genuinely above and beyond the call of duty.

while it may be revolting to you, the OP is in the USA, where tipping is acceptable at an airport lounge (though not required or expected)

the OP is at the BA CCR lounge at JFK, not at the British Embassy in NYC.

If you see a tip left on a table, is it permissible to pocket it yourself?

People tip in the USA not just because it is part of “tipping culture” but because in some (many?) contexts waiters (etc) won’t make a living wage from what they are paid by the employer alone, so the shortfall has to come from the customer. Look up “tipping wage” online and you’ll see.

Given that, the question here perhaps should be: how much are the workers in the BA lounges paid? Are they direct BA employees or contract staff? Presumably there is a difference in wages there but maybe not....

If they are adequately compensated then maybe lounge users shouldn’t feel the need to tip.

When in lounges in the US I follow my usual rule and tip a percentage of the bill.
