I have a feeling it's also a lot less touristy and less overrun than Hawaii (HNL).
Just for the avoidance of confusion - The Big Island is Hawaii, HNL is on Oahu.

Oahu has a lot of attractions but none of them are in Honolulu itself.
I'm a big Hawaii fan, but Maui is a good family proposition as well.

Visited Big Island back in 2006, my first business class flights ( AA)

Loved the Island, we had a couple days around a conference at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, ( conference was at the Hapuna ) and drove all of it except Mauna Kea itself. Would Seriously love to return but hotel prices re the pound are silly, one day maybe.... prices are now 3 times what we paid per night. But if we can find a way for a decent price with BA then another hotel would be ace.

Later this year - 241 on BA 747 upper deck to San Diego, then 300 return on Hawaiian wide body to HNL [OK, it's economy - but paired window seats]. Sorted...

That interesting! Our last trip out there in 2017 (OGG17 TR in my signature), all in J/Dom F, for 2 was:
BA - JER-UK-DUB 237 (+73k Avios)
AA - DUB-CLT-LAX-OGG 3230

So about 3500 overall.

Kaanapali Beach Hotel was another 2k for 10 nights.

Given AA systems only sell from 330 days out, you're a bit too early for the whole compliment of fares for next summer using oneworld. Give it a month or two and you'll see lower ones come up that cover 01JUL onwards.

The fares from now onwards from DUB to HNL with Oneworld have doubled overnight!

Probably in anticipation of a "50% off" sale

Never book more than 9 months out unless you see something stupidly cheap that also suits your route - discounted fares will come along!

I confess to having a fear of an empty MMB, so we do tend to book VERY early ... it helps year-planning, and potential Gold renewal (OK, I’m sad).

We have NOTHING on the books for 2020/21 Membership year (starting May), just a bunch of stuff that will renew Gold (by Christmas 2019) and a couple of probables for May/Jun next year.

Life would be simpler if we hadn’t discovered FT and BAEC

you could fly to JFK or Boston and jump on Hawaiian Airlines A330 with a very comfortable lie flat seat. Gets you started in the aloha spirit early on, and if you fly through Boston you get to do the longest domestic US flight!

There is no right answer to this. Having originally taken a leisurely route I now prefer a one stop route. I would avoid a redeye with a recliner seat. Remember LAX to HNL is farther than LHR to CAIMy preference, and what I will be doing next year, is LHR, LAX, Hawaii destination and return. An early morning return from Hawaii to LAX is recommended with a following overnight flight to Europe.

All this reminds us that, having done Hawaii Thrice, its an awfully long and tiring way to go for .... what?

At our ages ... box ticked, shirts/t-shirts purchased and bragging rights achieved, but the Caribbean is just as sunny and easier/cheaper to do.

YMMV, of course.
