No same day change nonsense

Sat in Belfast waiting for the 20.10 to LHR. Want to get on the 19.00, and there is space, but can’t as I have a connection onwards in the morning.

Is is there any point in being a member of the executive club?

If the fare conditions don't permit changes, you can be GGL and not get discretion. That's just the way it is.

connecting bookings don't come with SDC, only simple returns and one way bookings.

i am afraid there is no formal policy of free changes for status levels.

And it is possible to get ticket(s) with this flexibility, if this scenario was in contention at the time of purchase.

I can wait an hour, I’ll survive. Traffic was good so I arrived early, no entitlement to change just thought common sense may prevail.

Why is it common sense?
You chose to book a particular type of fare/ticket/route. That's what your common sense told you to do.

well, all the major airlines in the USA allow same day change/standby on most fares, for a fee (or free for some elites), so it is not a stretch to think that BA could offer this, and they could even make some money on the proposition.

I did a SDC to a flight and car (Holidays) booking on Friday. Was able to move to a flight 5 hours earlier (which later got delayed by almost 3 hours arriving due to weather). Did however have to pay a little extra to get the car moved earlier as the original class was not available earlier.

I didn’t make a conscious choice to book something specific. I just booked a flight. I was clearly naive to think it could be changed. I’ve learnt something today.

Sounds like you were lucky. Yes, there are days when BA will allow it generally if weather is an issue, you usually see signs around T5 when that is in force.

Indeed they do and its a courtesy for elites so why not BA? If there is space available, use it. It's called"common sense".
Not helpful comments that you didn't pay for that etc.

They do offer it, albeit not officially. I cannot remember the last time I was refused to take an BA earlier service than I booked.

And many US airlines offer complimentary upgrades as a benefit. Not everything American is necessarily more common sense

It isn't common sense idea to start encouraging people to start booking cheaper flights and then allowing them to change to more expensive ones

It seems pretty much common sense that if someone has an inflexible ticket , not to give that person the benefits of a flexible one
