Flights cancelled months in advance??

How does BA already know that they have to cancel flights that are weeks/months away.

Three flights in the last two weeks. One in a few weeks and the others in December/January!

BA768 01 Dec LHR-OSL
BA114 27 Jul JFK-LHR
BA 769 31 Jan OSL-LHR

I guess it's good to have the advance notice but I'm curious how it works that the already know they can't operate these flights...

maybe took a look at loads, realized they could re-accommodate those passengers already booked and create a gap for scheduled maintenance or similar - easily done on the JFK route with the number of daily flights on BA

no exact science to how they pick which flights to can, I suspect - but that would be my guess for your situation here

Cancelled in full or re-timed ? There are a lot of timetable shuffles right now for autumn, see the last couple of days :

Delta cancelled my CUN-SEA direct. Now with a lay over in SLC. Checked Delta's webpage and there are no direct flights back to SEA. Also checked expedia and kayak that show no direct flights by anyone. *sigh*

if you haven’t already accepted your JFK rebooking, they might be willing to put you on AA for a change if you fancied the tiring that.

This winter, BA cancelled plenty of one off short haul and long haul flights in the winter season. Destinations with 4, 5 or 8 flights schedule may find themselves with 2, 3, or 5 on any given day. BA will ruthlessly cancel and then rebook you on what is left. It will be exactly the same this coming year.

Fairly common. Not just BA.

Cancelling in advance (two weeks) avoids expensive EC261 obligations.

Worst case is when service to the destination is completely eliminated or suspended for the season.

Remind me, if your flight is cancelled with so many months' notice, and you're automatically rebooked on the later one, do you have any leg to stand on if you'd like to claim the price difference between the cancelled flight and the later flight (later flight having been the cheapest option at the time of booking)

no just the same as they don’t charge you extra to go on more expensive flights however if it’s cheaper for you to cancel and rebook at the lower fare that’s also your option.

Note that this means cheaper at the time you rebook, not cheaper according to prices at the time the ticket was purchased.

MAN-LHR 1385 8am morning flight cancelled in November. Not many flights now from Manchester in the morning if you don’t fancy the 6:35am flight!
