The last time I came through LHR, I had a 4-hour transfer T3-T5 and chose to come out landside and use the T5 Arrivals Lounge, so I had unlimited opportunities to wander out.
LHR generally is not a good transit option for a smoker.

Yes and it is a mission. It took me nearly an hour from start to finish. Never again. Next time, I'll just go straight through as an arrival.

Or people with no control over their kids, People too fat to fit in seats, people upset their ticket has a gender on it, nut allergy suffers, emotional support animals, people who’s imaginary friend in the sky tells them to pray 6 times a day and they can’t sit next to a women, hippies that eschew deodorant or clean appropriate clothing but want to travel 1st class, those content to remove their shoes, pick their nose, nails or teeth...
In fact pretty much everyone is accommodated and tolerated in every which what way they choose to believe or behave.
Except the self-righteous keep making the person who wants to smoke walk further and stand somewhere colder and wetter...

It was the hassle that made me give it up. I rented a house where I had to stand outside and I got fed up with standing in the rain. Add to that at work it was either stand outside in the rain or use the smoking room which made you stink like you had wallowed in an ashtray. That was 20 years ago. I think the increased difficulty now would have made me do it faster. My wife held on until 2008 - I have a photo of her smoking her last one outside T4 before we went off on a big trip - our last BA flight from T4 as we came back into the newly opened T5.
I always hated the smell of it and still do, although it rarely bothers me now of course. I'm all for smoking areas but they should be well ventilated. I think a lot of people don't realise that it's the smell on clothes that lingers.

Seven months to the date yesterday and never thought I would last without a ciggie but I have thankfully. I do sometimes miss that excitement of getting off the plane at T5 and racing out to the smoking shelter on the departure level and having a few before the next flight but having now got back my sense of smell (and for health reasons too), I won’t be rushing back. Couldn’t believe the ‘aroma’ when I first started smelling properly again.
However, I have vowed to NEVER be one of those fire & brimstone ex smokers who chastises smokers like it’s an Olympic sport.
I could murder a wee cigar right now

I packed in for 5 months about 15 years ago and I was thoroughly miserable the whole time. Then I had a few drinks at the local and a couple of my mates were smoking (which was, of course, allowed in those days). I begged a cigarette off one of them and have never looked back since.
For any smokers looking for refuge areas in airports and smoker-friendly hotels, I highly recommend heading over to the Smoking Lounge on FT.

Smoking at Heathrow T5
I am traveling from heathrow in a couple of weeks, my friend is also flying on an earlier flight and has CCR access so I was going to go early to meet be able to access the concord room his flight is at 2 and mine at 4. I was wondering if there was anywhere past security to smoke before my flight. Or can you go back through security to the check in area and then back through security again? Do boarder agents have an issue? I assume im not the first to ask, but also people who may have left things in cars needing to go back etc.

There's provision for smokers after security in T2 and T4 and in theory you could transfer over to either via the airside bus transfer before transferring back again after your nicotine fix. In reality i don't know how easy this will be to accomplish as you won't have a boarding pass to depart from there. I suppose you could be needing to purchase something from one of the shops there that isn't represented in T5.... but I don't know if this is a permissable reason to make the terminal transfer.
