1. no it's absolutly not fine

2. no they wern't. they were trying to ensure his and everyone elses safety

3. Not quite. each passenger would still have a back support and a harness. No regulator is going to approve passengers just being able to stand.

Last year (May ‘18), I had the ‘pleasure’ of an Ellinair flight from Kiev to Thessaloniki. They do not stop feeding you the whole flight which led to the problem of an extremely over worked cabin crew...particularly the cabin manager.

There was a continual queue of people waiting for the toilet on decent. The last person was walking from the toilet on landing.

The cabin manager gave the ‘cabin secure’ message (which it wasn’t) a second before wheels touched.

Not a single announcement from the flight deck...including “10 minutes to landing”.

The whole flight was like watching a 3D ‘Seconds From Disaster’ or ‘Air Crash Investigation’ episode...and I was in it.

Maybe the crew’s banter should have been that it’s now with the captain to decide whether there is any further action taken at Gatwick. Two hours sweating would seem fair punishment for the crime, or if the passenger remained indifferent that’s maybe a good marker the police should be called in.

As someone that promulgated one of the above quoted statements I agree that one should always bear in mind if someone has a disability, but there was nothing in the OP's description of events that pointed to the person having a disability. Yes it could be a hidden disability, but as someone that knows people with variety of mental and physical disabilities, these disabilities never in my experience give rise to dangerous, rude or objectionable behaviour and nor should they be permitted to do so. The people that I know with disabilities want to be treated like others and want adjustments to be made for that purpose, but that does not usually extend to tolerating or accepting behaviour that is otherwise completely unacceptable- yes I can think of some exceptions, but then I would expect there to be prior notification to the CC and also someone with the passenger to assist and intervene.

Interesting new angle - I was on holiday last week over here and in a restaurant one night we were seated with a Captain from one of the big two UK LCC's (better not name the airline). I got chatting to him and mentioned what had happened and he said without question he would have returned to the terminal and had him offloaded. Period.
If it had been brought to his attention only after take-off he would have radioed ahead to the authorities at GOA and requested assistance from the airport security to meet the aircraft at the gate to escort off a disruptive passenger. But there was no question there would have been zero tolerance to what happened and action taken at either LGW or GOA.

Interesting he mentioned the problem of how many smokers are caught in the toilet on his airline, many more than I would have thought. Their policy if the lav smoke indication goes off in the cockpit is for one of the CC to open the door to the toilet suddenly without warning and catch them red-handed ^
