Free seat selection at check-in not possible

I always thought everybody could select a free seat at the time of check-in for BA flights. But all seats are showing a price.

I get assigned a seat for free but when I want to change it it costs me anything from €14 to €20.

I'm using BA's app.

The mobile boarding pass is also not showing my fare code. Can I find this somewhere else?

Free seat selection is gone I'm afraid if you don't hold one world sapphire or emerald status.

Is it a Hand baggage only fare? If so, you can only select a seat for free if you hold Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status. For a non-HBO booking, you should be able to select a seat for free at online check-in

From your description, it sounds like you are travelling on a Basic (economy, hand baggage only) ticket, in which case the options available to you are indeed, accept the seat allocated to you or pay for an alternative seat.

Other options may materialise at the checkin desk.

OK thanks. Hand baggage only indeed. First time I use such a fare. Wasn't aware that there were other consequences as well.

I hope they earn miles because the only reason I booked them was to keep my balance from expiring.

There is also free seat selection at 7 days if BA Bronze, AA Gold, oneworld Ruby on Basic fares.

And yes you should get a mileage credit for that ticket.

used to have status with OW but that's unfortunately no longer true.

Good to hear about the mileage credit!
