LONSYD any Creative Ideas please?!
STATUS etc.
- Blue Members, 70k Avios & an AX 2-4-1 voucher. - Travelling in February 2020. - Budget <£1500 per pax. AIMS - A WT+ seat, or better, for some of the journey. - Willing to fly any OW carrier. Love CX, QR ain't shabby either. - A couple of days stopover somewhere safe and preferably warm en route. Thinking of flying to SIN (AY/BA/QR) in Y for circa £500 and then buying T Class BA tickets to Sydney and back for the balance of budget. OR using 241 on BA to a low cost intermediate point and buying a business ticket to SYD on MH/CX or possibly MEL on UL. Any/all constructive suggestions willingly and gratefully received. Thanks. |
Cheapest I can see from a very brief look in business all the way is ~£2000pp return on CX or ~£2100pp return on QR (both ex-EU). That's a bit over the budget but business all the way.
There are some ex-EU fares on QR to Bangkok for ~£1300pp rtn and could nest with a Economy on the shorter BKK-SYD on Malaysian for ~£500rtn. But still at around ~£1800 it's a bit above you price point but longer in Business than your suggestion of going to SIN in Y. |

A good option for Buiness all the way but not a Oneworld carrier that was wanted.
Worth noting that it could be even cheaper out of Germany, the Air China sales usually are. |
1) Slightly over price range at 1594 GBP
2) OW Carrier 3) Positioning required to HEL 4) 4 PE Segments HEL-NRT-SYD Return 5) Long Layover https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e1cd813a3.jpg |
Think I would be tempted to try to save up a bit more and get QR J from OSL / ARN in the next sale.
|
Unsure your specific dates, but BA have BRU-LHR-SIN-SYD in WT+ for £1472 per person during your sale period . CX have flights cutting the LHR legs out for a shade more at ~£1535, if you don't mind positioning to BRU (flight or Eurostar are both good options).
Not sure what JL W is like (as above) but their J is excellent. Adding stopovers seems to be in the order of £50-60ish per person but I haven't played with a lot of options. Hope this helps! |
Keep an eye on QR out of Scandinavia and the Nordics, the fares in Business can be below your budget - not common but it does happen.
Not OW, but SQ sometimes have very low fares from ARN, the catch is a stop at DME both ways where you have to clear security. It is operated on an A350 though and it is SQ! |
If you want ex-LON, there LHR- SYD (Feb 3- 17) on JAL for £1772 in Premium Economy. Fare found on Kayak but booking would be with JAL.
|
CX Business is gbp 2000 roundtrip flying Stockholm-(BA)-London-HK-Sydney and back. Over budget but worth understanding what spending a bit more would give you.

I'd just add that while a QR J itinerary doesn't fall within budget, that it would boost the two passengers quite close to BA Silver. With a positioning flight presumably on BA, you'd mostly need two more segments with BA to get Silver (may have to book the economy fare class that earns 10TP if there's no other flight activity).
If budget is strict or status of no interest, I would burn the 241 to fly in WTP to, well, pretty much any eastern hub. KUL, CMB, HKG, SIN, whatever is cheapest to depart from. Then a paid PE/Biz ticket to get to Sydney. There's also the option of buying avios to get a 241 WTP redemption to SYD but I can only imagine those are very sparse. |
FWIW and noting orbitmic's comments, I might suggest having a look at QR's current promo fare in business ARN-CNS for approx GBP 1570 R/T. Routing is ARN-DOH-HKG-CNS with HKG-CNS on CX. Would return 840 TP, giving all pax at least BAEC Silver. There is some availability in Feb, but it's disappearing rapidly. I'd book it myself, but unfortunately I have other commitments on the days there is availability.
The OP could use their avios to offset the costs of positioning flights using BA and QF. And maybe they would like a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, as well. See https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qata...g-only-14.html for more info. Can be booked on QR's website. |
Thanks all for the replies above. I think we'll try and keep it OW, I'll certainly have a look at the QR option ex ARN. The BA WT+ fare ex Brussels seems interesting, I can't seem to find anything like it though!! In the meantime, if I keep it BA: -
1. BA 15 Q 03FEB LHRSIN 2145 1830+1 2. BA 12 T 24FEB SINLHR 2315 0515+1 Out WT, Back WT+ = GBP840.22, combined with: - 1. BA 15 T 06FEB SINSYD 2005 0650+1 2.
