Straws & Stirrers

These have been lacking from LHR lounges for a while. At first I thought maybe a supply issue, but recently I asked and was told they have been withdrawn due to health and safety... which struck me as a load of old nonsense and I presumed it was code for cost cutting...

anyone else missing using a straw with their GnT?

The CCR have been using wooden stirrers for quite a while now. I guess it's not so much health and safety as environmental concerns.

I dislike stirrers and straws ... they invariably try to get up my nose.

A lot of places have moved to being 'Straw Free' for environmental reasons.

Plus, there's enough stirrers on this board without having anymore in the lounges

I think it far more likely to be due to the public backlash against plastic. I'm sure that paper straws will be available once the procurement guys have caught up on things.

I find that people sometimes confuse HSE (as in Health and Safety Executive) and HS&E (Health, Safety & Environment) and call it "health and safety" when it's really the latter that is being mentioned as a package of concepts, even when the focus is letter E at the end of the latter

I suspect this was one such case.

Not cost-cutting but an environmental saving, these plastic items have been removed and are being replaced with materials less damaging to the environment - the plastic stirrers are being replaced with wooden ones and straws with paper ones. I've noticed wooden stirrers on board some aircraft too.

We’re very keen on recycling/plastic waste here in JER. Waitrose has even stopped having a clear plastic panel in their bread bags, so they can be recylcled with other paper/card.

When I was a kid, plastic was a rarity. Waxed paper straws, wooden lolly sticks and stirrers, paper bags for purchases. All getting quite nostalgic now! But the USA has a long way to go on plastic ... stores churn out plastic bags by the millions on a daily basis.

Recycling isn't much in evidence here...most 1lt beer bottles are returnable which gets you a discount off your next one and is about as much recycling that I do.

Whenever I want to mix a drink at home I just stir it with a tea spoon.

I find wooden stirrers can impart a woody flavour, especially to hot beverages. Not a fan.

I also live in a jurisdiction whose economy relies heavily on oil extraction.

Is BA still using plastic stirrers on board? AY has started using wooden ones, which as noted above seem to add a touch of woody flavour. To be honest, I'd be quite happy with no stirrers at all - I can just pour my tonic with a bit more oomph!

The woody flavour sucks in any drink, from a coffee to a screwdriver.
