BA status doesn't stop you being downgraded on BA, so AA status certainly doesn't prevent it either. It may help, it may not, it doesn't hurt.

Happening to my in CW LAS-LHR last year. I could not check-in at T-24. "need to do it at the airport", was the response from the call centre

Went to the airport well ahead of time, cabin was full, as was most of the flight. went to the gate anyhow (as advised), still CW was full. They asked to downgrade us to PE, but my partner has a bad knee, and required lay flat. With no options with other airlines to get us home much earlier, we were IDB, put on the flight the next day (didn't leave until we had guaranteed seat assignments), sorted out with food and lodgings, and given $1250 each on a prepaid card.

It was awful

I wonder why the agent said that? Did they offer an explanation?

when i asked "what?" all he said was "from [his] experience, it helps if you check in online in advance to secure your seat rather than wait until airport"

so, not sure as he was just basing it off his personal experience i presume. but like many of us, i prefer the satisfaction of my boarding card on my phone somewhere around the T-24-20hr mark
