Checking in hand luggage before security

It's been about 10 months since I last flew BA and the first time from Gatwick (normally Heathrow).

Can anyone tell me if it is routinely permitted to allow hand luggage to be checked in before security on HBO fares?

I know at Heathrow there are dedicated hand luggage desks and it's encouraged, regardless of whether the flight is busy or not.

Yes it is OK at LGW, so long as it is below the HBO limits and you don't take a large bag through with you. If they have the machines switched on, I think they are programmed for it too.

For the sake of anyone researching this, this facility works at LHR, LGW and all domestic sectors. I have a feeling it doesn't at LCY, and I would welcome any reports from the last 6 months or so, but they are OK with gate check. Outstations generally only allow it for sure if there is the usual email/text prompt, though usually they're OK with gate checking.
