New Route - Dammam

Quote -

dammam

British Airways has today announced it will fly from Heathrow to global business hub, Dammam in Saudi Arabia from December 1, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

The route will be the only direct flight from London and launch as a daily service via Bahrain.

Flights will be operated by a four-class Boeing 777-200 departing year-round from Heathrow Terminal 5, landing into Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport.

Dammam is the capital of the Eastern Province and is known as the heart of the country’s petroleum industry. Dammam will be the third city in Saudi Arabia British Airways flies to with the airline already serving Riyadh and Jeddah with non-stop daily flights.

Moran Birger, Head of Sales for The Middle East and Asia Pacific, said: “Our customers are currently offered a limo service between Bahrain and Dammam, but the direct service will now enable seamless travel in eight hours from our home at Heathrow. More than half of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas is produced in this region, so this new link underlines the importance of the Eastern province of the Kingdom and the need for smooth onward connections to Europe and the United States.”

Return fares start from Ł498 in World Traveller, Ł603 for World Traveller Plus, Ł2274 for Club World and Ł3798 in First.

Dammam is one of five long-haul routes being launched by British Airways in 2019, its centenary year. The airline is also launching non-stop flights to Pittsburgh and Charleston in the US, Osaka in Japan and Islamabad in Pakistan alongside several short-haul routes.

As British Airways marks its centenary year, the airline is set to look to the future with the arrival in July of its first of 18 A350-1000s, complete with the new Club Suite. Forming a significant part of the airline’s current five year Ł6.5bn investment programme for customers, the airline will receive four A350-1000s in 2019 and will begin a phased refit of its existing long-haul fleet with the next generation Club cabin. Two current Boeing 777s will also receive the Club Suite this year and the airline will be taking a phased approach to its roll-out.

As part of its Ł6.5bn investment over five years, the airline is revamping its First, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins, rolling out industry-leading WiFi across its aircraft, opening new lounges and delivering great menus from the world’s leading airline caterers.

The Bahrain-Dammam leg will be interesting - it's only 54 miles! Will they even bother putting the landing gear away...?

Will that be the world's shortest international air route?

ok, excluding light aircraft...?
Also, a few of those shorter routes don't seem to have non-stop services (e.g. Brazzaville/Kinshasa) if Google Flights is any guide...

Gosh. When GF flew BAH-DMM it was at 12k feet with the gear down the whole way.

... and some of them don't even have a runway! e.g. Monaco

Shoddy click-bait journalism by Business Insider I say...

I'm curious as to why this is doing BAH then DMM, rather than either the other way round or a triangular LHR-BAH-DMM-LHR...?

Both might be explained by BAH being the larger destination, but with the timings for such a short hop does it really obviate much pain versus the limo transfer?

that one seems to be a helicopter route. Which, ok, you can debate whether it counts or not. But a helicopter flying from nice to Monaco is an international flight 😉

(yes I know, they also don’t claim it as commercial or jet service or whatever)

A direct route via somewhere. Makes sense in airline speak but is a bit daft in the real world...

Only because the real world uses language far too loosely, including often choosing to use jargon because it gives the impression of being "in the know" when the user doesn't actually know what it means.

Unfortunately, even FT isn't immune. There's a reason why I use the word "cash", not "revenue".
