[tl;dr of previous post: don’t do this, listen to FTers and call KLM]

Called KLM Platinum line … somebody just cancelled, and me and another person were in the queue for the seat. I guess my Lifetime Platinum status helped (or helped screw the other unfortunate soul).
Now, need to talk to Expedia for a possible refund! Any advice? 24-hour rule?

Given the price of your flight to London, it is probably refundable/flexible.

Expedia - if you booked on the US site it should be free (although possibly not given it is so close to departure). In any case check the fare rules which should list the cancellation fee. You might also call them and ask.

24 hr rule does not apply if the flight is within 24 hours. So either you booked a refundable tix and you are good, or you have at least a changeable one, will change the date and make your next jaunt to London an expensive one, or otherwise you are £500 poorer but richer in experience!

Can sort out refunds knowing now what I know now!
On the phone right now - fully refundable and Expedia won't take a fee as less than 24hrs.

All is well that will hopefully end well! Looks like a very tricky situation pretty much turned around.
It never ceases to amaze me that in some ways, FT seems to combine the qualities of a top TA and a top PA and probably in some ways exceeding the skills of most! ^

The more substantial issue than the change fee that affects most people in this kind of situation would be the advance booking requirement, i.e. cheap "ex-EU" are often INCEUxx, xx being the number of days in advance that it needs to be ticketed, plus the fare bucket availability.
Unless the traveller can postpone the trip by the number of days in xx onto the date when the I class is available, the fare difference can be quite large depending on what can be booked at the time.
