Two reasons for it being slow
+ the number of people using it and what they are using it for.
+ the spec the customer (BA) wanted the supplier to provide to them.

Yes and also in the GF as well.
The Virgin brand name is I believed licensed to an American company these days Liberty Media and is not actually owned by Branson.
I do agree that the internet speed in the lounge is woeful if you actually want to download a film or music. I actually do wonder if they throttle download speeds.

But is that not just the problem?
People downloading movies and music?
I doubt the Wifi is intended to be so media download heavy, more for checking emails, light surfing etc. not downloading the entire box set of The Magic Roundabout, or whatever takes someones fancy.

No I just wanted to report everything I experience with BA to you guys.
now onboard and feeling this is going to be a great flight because I’m 744UD and I don’t have a seat mate. The upbeat and polite crew suggested another champagne.
but no WiFi on this 744 though. :-(

It may be for reasons of bandwidth that getting a VPN connection in T5 lounges can sometimes be difficult. Not impossible, just difficult.
Certainly when trying to reach my VPN provider's website, Virgin Media cheerfully informed me that I couldn't, for reasons of "safety".

Download speeds have interested me of late.
Yes, the LGW FLounge was giving me 3 mbps, and I noticed the Virgin logo when logging in!
At home I get 60-70 mbps on my Fibre connection ... I could pay for more, but don’t need it.
In PHX last month, to my surprise, the Hawthorn Suites was giving me 70-80 mbps!
... but I only surf and chat when travelling, I don’t download libraries of stuff on Public networks. If I wanted to do that, it would happen at home

MAN also connects through Virgin and struggles to reach 1mbps, even when the lounge is nearly empty. It's awful !

I complained and was phoned by the GF manager just before boarding. He made some excuses about the exchange needing to be upgraded.
As we all know from AA in T3, fast wifi is certainly possible in LHR
