Drop Down TV Screens

Why have these gone rapidly out of fashion on BA?

I know BA may have taken them out on the A321 and new aircraft don’t have them fitted but last week was the first time in ages that I’ve seen the new safety video and the moving maps. Not so long ago, they were deployed on every sector that had them, now more often than not we have to listen to the painful manual safety demo. The moving maps are also missed on longer short haul sectors.

Anyone know why BA has fallen out of love with them?

Existing Airbus A320s are being converted into CEO configuration which includes removal of the screens and the video equipment. The only Airbus short haul aircraft left with a moving map will be the A319, which will not be converted.

I thought they were not fitted to ex-BMI aircraft and BA has decided to align the fleet with onboard connectivity instead so you will have Wi-fi, USB Power and streaming video (which should include a moving map stream iirc).

So the manual safety demo will stay. Not sure what the hold up is on rolling out the Wi-fi though....

And for the other side of this argument, see New Safety Video!

Is maintainance being done to the overhead screens or are they being left to rot for their eventual departure?

I've been on a few LHR A320 CEO aircraft recently with their screens INOP.

You might be the only person on FT who prefers the video demo to a manual one!

No, I prefer it too! :-) In fact was mildly perturbed on a recent flight LGW - SZG that there were no screens. I miss the moving map more, but the 'manual' demo is tedious.

LH does not have them on their short haul aircraft, rather the info that BA provided on them is provided in the Lufthansa app using the onboard wifi for free

I am hoping that as BA roles out wifi something similar will happen

Flight status is shown for free on the landing webpage on the longhaul BA aircraft with Wifi, so I would assume this is where this data would be shown on shorthaul too
