Skis too long (exceeds 190 cm)

I am flying to Vancouver next month. I will have two pairs of skis in a hard case called a Sportube. The problem is that my skis are too long - the Sportube will measure about 197cm in length. The BA website says the maximum length is 190cm.

Is this likely to get picked up at check in? Im nervous about skis getting left behind at T3...

My skis are about 200cm in the bag and I've never had any issues on BA. I've actually spotted the 190cm recently and asked a few friends who are avid skiers and frequently fly with skis - they haven't had any problems either with bags which were around 200 cm long.

I ski on 195s, no problems last week at T3 or Barcelona on the return. They did weigh them at check-in at LHR in the re-pack area, but that was it.

I highly doubt you would have any issues, from experience of checking in skis at multiple locations over the 190cm limit.

Flew from Gatwick last week and the oversized baggage guy checked the length of my companions bag. They had tape on the ground with the maximum dimensions and it was fine. I have no idea what length it is but my skis are 167 and my bag substantially longer - I think it is hit and miss!

I recall the story of a passenger in a similar situation applying the "Pythagoras solution" and putting the oversized item diagonally in a cardboard box.

Not quite sure where you would find a 190cm*52.1cm cardboard box though...

Thanks all - this is extremely helpful. I will report back if I have any problems.

I'm also 6'3, and my skis are also 187cm. It is just that the case has padding at either end, which has added to the length.

Incidentally, if anyone is looking for a good ski case, I recommend Sportube. Very impressed with it so far.

Yes, please report back either way. I recently travelled BA no problem with a pair of 188s in a soft bag but am looking to to upgrade to the Sportube or another brand which is about 2 metres.

@DaveNCL - I'm a similar height and usually ski shorter than 187 on carving skis but bought the longer 188 powder skis for a trip to Hokkaido, Japan. Well worth it :-)

What would happen if they were too long? Presumably you'd have to pay extra? I'm assuming that you wouldn't simply be required to leave them....
