LHR weather cancellations shorthaul - Tuesday 22 January 2019

The following are cancelled and emails should have been sent out approx 18:00 hrs today to those affected (I'm one of them and I did get the email but not the usual text message)

BA348/349 NCE
BA426/427 AMS
BA442/443 AMS
BA462/463 MAD
BA486/487 BCN
BA502/503 LIS
BA546/547 FCO
BA568/569 LIN
BA580/581 MXP
BA736/737 GVA
BA782/783 ARN
BA828/829 DUB
BA838/838 DUB
BA856/857 PRG
BA919/920 STR
BA1420/1421 BHD
BA1458/1465 EDI
BA1492/1497 GLA

Reason for the cancellation according to BA: "Winter weather is forecast to impact London Heathrow airport tomorrow, Tuesday 22ndJanuary 2019. As a result of the expected weather, the following flights have now been cancelled for 22nd January." This looks like pro-active cancellation to prevent excessive delays to the entire schedule, though in terms of the number of flights this is at the lower level of cancellations in these circumstances.

I didn't get an email or text but went to check in for my AMS flight to find it cancelled. Took about 3 goes to rebook onto the earlier one as I kept getting errors but the new time suits me better as I'll get to my hotel in time for dinner now.

Forecast is:
Early rain (with 10% risk sleet) clearing by 0400Z followed by an ice risk from 0500-0900Z. A fine, bright and dry morning followed by a wintry band of showers moving through in the afternoon. A 60% risk of sleet/snow from 1300Z with the main threat going by 1600-1700Z with a lowering risk of isolated wintry flurries until 2100Z. 0-1cm accumulations with 10% risk 1-2cm.

With de-icing / anti-icing operations likely to delay those departures by a potential 20 minutes, tactical cancellations are the pragmatic way forward.

Is there an expectation that there will be further delays on Wednesday too?

Am affected too and got the email and the text. Booked on the next flight which is a day later.

What I find shocking on the whole rebooking process is that it does not advise you of your rights under duty of care. In fact it’s almost the opposite. The cancellation FAQ’s first Q is ‘will I have to pay extra to take the replacement flight’ !!! And nowhere in the circa 20 Q&A does it mention duty of care - let alone of course any mention of circumstances where EC261 compensation is payable or not.

Doesn't bode well for remainder of winter if they're cancelling flights when the forecast is a bit of rain and light winds. Very odd.

Hi.

Post #3 has the forecast as a risk of sleet and wintry showers during the course of the day so it is not just rain.

Regards

I suspect it is your assumptions regarding the reason for the cancellations.

That sounds more like Heathrow being poorly prepared for winter rather than anything else...

Perhaps we should concentrate our discussion on assisting those affected (and potentially affected) by these weather cancellations rather than regurgitate the usual moans about LHR and its difficulty in coping with bad/poor weather conditions?
