In the case of MAS, there was also some history.
Its predecessor was Malaysia Singapore Airlines or MSA - a very well-known initialism when it was current. IIRC, when that airline was divided between Malaysia and Singapore, one matter agreed between the governments was that neither successor airline would seek to use the initials MSA.
Malaysia therefore adopted a name which allowed the similar-but-different initials MAS. I wonder whether it really was mere fashion "in the day", given that SAS (1946) long pre-dated the foundation of MAS (1972) - perhaps the precedent set by SAS gave someone the idea for a word that would allow the initial S to be included.
Singapore originally decided to name its successor airline "Mercury Singapore Airlines", but IIRC Malaysia objected as the initials would breach that agreement. Singapore then decided to adopt the simple and straightforward "Singapore Airlines".

I was boarding an A3 flight yesterday at T2 A20 which has a particularly long walkway with a glass wall overlooking 27L and T4. I was watching what was passing by as I walked down and noted a Finnair A320 and a BA 747 and it then struck me it was the Landor 747 and it just looked so right and normal to be passing by unlike the jarring Chatam Dockyard A319 that was following it!

Thinking about more older liveries as BA's centenary celebration liveries...

I believe that Cambrian Airways could be a possible predecessor of BA, showing that it could've been part of the BOAC-BEA merger. I think Northeast Airlines was part of that merger too, so why not paint two of BA's aircraft (one Airbus A320neo and one Boeing 777-300ER) in the above retro Cambrian Airways livery, and one of BA's Boeing 787-8s in a retro Northeast Airlines livery? It could be all part of BA's centenary celebrations!

You are correct, both of those airlines ended up as part of BA (albeit indirectly.) Unfortunately BA have stated that only four of their aircraft will get retro liveries and I don't think they'll be doing more. I think it is a shame, as there are many airline liveries people would like to have seen. How about a Dan-Air liveried A350, anyone?

Theres a rich history they could have chosen, but alas its not to be. So Im going to enjoy what they have done, when they could have done nothing at all.

This may be mere coincidence, but the date I last saw for G-CIVB (Negus) was 20 March 2019. Both G-BYGC and G-BNLY currently seem to be planned to be on the ground at LHR on 19 March 2019, with G-BNLY planned to be on the ground on 20 March 2019 as well. I wonder whether this may be for photo opportunities?
