It looks like it's part of an aircraft system - some static port, perhaps? It's visible on other 747s, so it's not peculiar to this retro livery.

Quite! Though in all seriousness it would be interesting to see an A320 painted into the original "old" logo dark blue/grey British Midland livery.

I know BMI is recent history, in more than one way, but the mainline part is just as much a part of BA as the other airlines.

That makes sense; that first picture link allowed me to zoom in too.

Thanks.

I think most of it would end up on eBay! Plus a logistical nightmare for caterers, particularly at outstations.

Absolutely stunning and looking forward to seeing her around in my travels. I'm not sure about the logo on the engine nacelles and I think some of the originals had the last 3 letters of the registration in white above the rudder but really happy to see this happen. I think this was the nicest livery of all and particularly nice to see the Speedbird again.

I love the final BOAC scheme - it looked particularly good on the VC10 and 707 and brings back loads of lovely memories as we travelled a lot on BOAC back and forth to school and sometimes when flying with Dad we were luck enough to fly 'up front'. Roast beef on a trolley. Upstairs Cocktail Bar. Visits to the cockpit. Junior Jet Club log books. First trip in a BOAC 747 in August 1972. I think the 747 gave us the expression 'turning left' when flying in First Class. Still love 1A/K.

FWIW I found the Landor scheme OK but a bit fussy.

The second design in our series of heritage liveries can be revealed today - an Airbus 319 will be painted in the colours of our short-haul predecessor, British European Airways (BEA).
The A319, reg G-EUPJ, will enter the IAC paint bay at Shannon Airport this weekend where it will be repainted with the BEA livery, which flew predominantly on domestic and European routes between 1959 and 1968. However, the aircraft will have a grey upper wing, rather than the traditional red, to meet current wing paint reflectivity requirements.

The red wings are a key feature! Can't they use matt paint or just do the undersides?

I think they should paint the entire fleet in the BOAC scheme. So elegant, so timeless.

Interesting to hear about the regulations stopping them painting the wings red.

However, I was really hoping that BA would go for the BEA Speedjack livery.
