AA/BA - AA doesn't have an interest in Avios nor does BA in AAdvantage miles. Fare paying results is all that matters due to the joint venture agreements in place across the Atlantic.

true but it is also a matter of backend infrastructure. god forbid AA/BA work together to make it happen.

They do via oneworld partner awards.
There's no financial incentive for them to do so to a greater degree than is already the case. Why would AA want some avios valued at a disadvantage exchange rate for an upgrade when they have no interest in Avios and it can command cold hard cash or make them available to its own frequent flyer program which judging by the gate standby lists on domestic flights I've taken people are quite happy to stump up advantage miles and elite upgrade certificates for?
And by comparative virtue what would BA want with Aadvantage miles upgraders when it is already finding it difficult enough to command upgrade availability to its own club members? For those reasons I hope to god they don't work to make it happen.
