Welcome to the thread. This is a continuation of the highly popular 2018 Tier Point thread (found here). We keep track of other prices, as well as useful reference information for those planning tier point runs.

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

This is a community-maintained wiki post. Please add important information to it or correct outdated information by clicking the "Edit" button below.

A new guideline thread for TP meetups has been created on 31 March 2020. If you would like other members to join your TP, or if you want to organize a TP run with other members. Please visit there. From the first few posts over there you could see the active ( confirmed ) TP meetings and the links to their relevant discussion threads, connect with other members and learn the details about the run. Click here to access that thread.

Please remember to:
  • Convert currencies to GBP, rounding to the nearest pound.
  • Post full routes and full booking classes.
  • Note any restrictions on booking in the Notes section.
  • List in order of price per tier point within the relevant departure area.

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post 4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread (here), MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and return on Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Hi All,

Sorry I started a Post on the 2018 thread, and didn't respond in time so it's not closed.

Still looking for deals for around 700 - 1000 TP's.

One question I had is when people route from say OTP to PHX via X, Y and Z - how do you 'know ' to do it.

Are these ITA options through people doing millions of searches - or is there somewhere (aside from this enormous thread) to keep an eye on for routings?

Thanks!

I can answer that! If you want to maximise TPs on a flight from the EU to the US, you will generally care about some things in the ticket conditions that limit what you can do. The full ticket conditions can be read on ITA for example, but it's usually the two following things that we pay attention to:

- Free transfers (usually 2 in Europe, 2 in North America)
- Maximum mileage (i.e. you can't just go from Europe to the west coast and back to the east coast on a cheap fare)

With that in mind, you can check out which cheap fares exist (for example, GOT-MIA, OTP-PHX, etc...) and route them better, for the modest price of a few airport fees, which aren't usually too expensive.

Let's say, for our first example we want to use the ARN-MIA fare. We know a TATL fare is 140TP, US domestic first is 40TP, and some EU segments can go up to 80TP, so we'll try to do the following: ARN-X-LHR (that's our two transfers in Europe), and then LHR-X-X-MIA (that's our two transfers in NA). The best way to get 80TP and not go too far is to add a LHR-HEL segment, so we get ARN-HEL-LHR to start (only works if Finnair has a ARN-HEL service, which they do!)

Then, for the other part we just fiddle with ITA and input X in the connections to help us. This is where we choose our favorite plane so if we want to take the 747 to Philadelphia we'll search ARN-HEL-LHR-PHL-X-MIA and ITA will tell us which cities it finds (I think in this case CLT). And here you go, bang, a 680TP return with ARN-HEL-LHR-PHL-CLT-MIA.

Now for the west coast it's a bit different, as you'll always want to do LHR-JFK-(LAX/SFO) because only JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO will give you 140TPs (and a flat bed!) so, we start the same way, but this time we're more constrained so we know we want to do search the following in ITA: OTP-HEL-LHR-JFK-(LAX/SFO)-PHX. And ITA will tell us whether going through SFO or LAX is possible, and in that case it is (at least for one of those two).

Now this can get a bit trickier if you're optimising flights to Asia but in that case you're either looking to route via SIN (which is 160TP), or use QR which is usually going to yield 4x140TP. And of course you can always read the ticket conditions on ITA.

With reservations made on AA.com including flights operated by other carriers i.e. BA/AY, is there a 24-hour cancellation policy?

I can't make sense of "including American Airlines flights operated by codeshare partners".

Does that only apply if it's marketed by AA with an AA code:

24 hour refund
When you buy a ticket 2 or more days prior to departure via aa.com or by phone with American Airlines Reservations for American Airlines flights (including American Airlines flights operated by codeshare partners), you have up to 24 hours from the time of ticket purchase to receive a full refund for your ticket.

To cancel your trip, log in to aa.com or contact Reservations and refunds will be automatically processed.

Award tickets can only be cancelled by calling Reservations. In case of a refund, mileage will be reinstated and tax and expedited fee (if paid) will be refunded.

For all ticket types, reservations service charges will not be refunded.

After 24 hours have elapsed, normal refund policies apply to the ticket. If you elect to make changes to the itinerary after the 24 hour time period, a change fee may apply and the ticket price may also change depending on the fare purchased.

For additional information, in the U.S., please contact American Airlines or American Eagle at 800-433-7300. If assistance is needed in Spanish, you may dial 800-633-3711. If you have a hearing or speech impairment, you may contact American Airlines or American Eagle at 800-543-1586. International reservations are handled through local offices, and those numbers can be found in local telephone directories.

Dont forget if you book the HEL shuffle far enough out, chances of a time change are high - allowing you then to insert the Transcon for a nice 1040TP run

Love the Helsinki / Vegas run above and very handy - will check that option now.

I'm in need of help from the experts on here! I'm currently gold but will not achieve the status again by the end of my earning year - March 8th - looking for circa 1200 points as I desperately need the status in 2019.

London based and happy to do a run over 5/6/7 days to get the bulk and happy to throw in a few short trips too - can travel anywhere and pretty flexible with dates. As I'm sure everyone says - I'd like to do it as quick and cheap as possible!!

HELP! (thanks in advance)

The fare does work with other west coast destinations, although LAS was the cheapest I found on my dates. I would try others however! Also bear in mind that according to the fare rules it must be booked today. No travel blackout dates however as far as you book 50 days in advance.
