Welcome to the thread. This is a continuation of the highly popular 2018 Tier Point thread (found here). We keep track of other prices, as well as useful reference information for those planning tier point runs.

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

This is a community-maintained wiki post. Please add important information to it or correct outdated information by clicking the "Edit" button below.

A new guideline thread for TP meetups has been created on 31 March 2020. If you would like other members to join your TP, or if you want to organize a TP run with other members. Please visit there. From the first few posts over there you could see the active ( confirmed ) TP meetings and the links to their relevant discussion threads, connect with other members and learn the details about the run. Click here to access that thread.

Please remember to:
  • Convert currencies to GBP, rounding to the nearest pound.
  • Post full routes and full booking classes.
  • Note any restrictions on booking in the Notes section.
  • List in order of price per tier point within the relevant departure area.

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post 4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread (here), MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and return on Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

It involves a second night in Helsinki, so the departure date of your second segment should be 26 Dec instead of 25 Dec.

Ah, thank you all. Found them by the +/- function. Earning some extra TP and the price is $200 more, plus a night hotel in HEL on top of that... I'll just do the other route not through HEL to save some $

There are plenty of RTs in the US ex-LAX that can net you 240 TPs while you're in the US. Some pretty stupid routings, but when have we ever made sense

ex: LAX - DFW - PHX - SJC RT for ~120 each way in J

Also as a gold you're missing out in the F lounge in LAX

MIA-LHR-SOF

hi,
im considering booking a trip ex dub that on the return will route me MIA - LHR - SOF to meet some friends out there.

I'll be landing in London around 11am and would like to spend an overnight in London before the onward flight to Sofia.

Will I be able to get my bag only checked as far as London allowing me to have my checked back with me at the hotel in London for the night or will there be no option but to get it checked from miami to Sofia?

thanks

Yes, should be no problem. If they happen to check it through, you can ask to have your bags retrieved before you leave the airside area.

Safest way: Book something like MIA-JFK-LGW;LHR-SOF or MIA-JFK-LCY;LHR-SOF.
The AA agents would probably deny short checking your bags to London, however, as megaloman mentioned, you could try talking to baggage services in Heathrow and pull your bags over there, though it would take time.

I had the AA agent refusing to check me in till I show them a visa for the UK (sic!) but never had an issue short checking baggage - be it for an overnight in LAX on Hawaii-Europe journey, or in LHR.

+1 Every time I've had an overnight connection at LHR they agent has offered to only check them that far. It would be an absolute state if that wasn't an option: "You must spend the night in London but you are not allowed access to clean underwear or toothpaste."

That said, if you were to apply the same logic to an overnight TATL and a long day stop at Heathrow, you'd allow pax to short check their bags then, too... but they don't.

Obviously also QR will not short-check to DOH when you have a long transit there, but they're very up front about not allowing that.

wanna have some story time? read further.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the frequentcaller of an airline called American Air
LINES

once upon a time late 2019, I booked a "TP optimized" holiday trip to YYZ in July 2020. As AA loves rescheduling, I was prepared for at least some changes, but boy.... I couldnt have been more wrong.
This is the evolution of my little itiniary for my CDG-YYZ flights mid July 2020

Version 1: CDG-HEL-LHR-JFK(overnight)-CLT-YYZ JFK // YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-CDG
Version 2: CDG-HEL-LHR-JFK-IAD-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-CDG
Version 3: CDG-HEL-LHR-BOS-(overnight)-LGA-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-CDG
Version 4: CDG-HEL-LHR-BOS-(overnight)-LGA-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-CDG (YYZ-CLT-JFK now from morning hrs to midday)
Version 5: CDG-HEL-LHR-BOS-(overnight)-LGA-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-CDG (HEL-LHR now AY1335 instead of BA 799) - we're now in the mid march cancellations
Version 6: CDG-HEL-LHR-BOS-(overnight)-LGA-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-CDG
Version 7: CDG-LHR-HEL-LHR-BOS-(overnight)-LGA-CLT-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-CDG
Version 8: CDG-LHR-HEL-LHR-JFK(overnight)-CLT-PIT-ORD-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-CDG
Version 9: FRA-LHR-HEL-LHR-JFK(overnight)-CLT-PIT-ORD-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-CDG
Version 10: TXL-LHR-HEL-LHR-JFK(overnight)-CLT-PIT-ORD-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-FRA

for what its worth: this would earn now 920 TP
and I wont take any of these flights...
i got AA hotline on quick dial and know most of the ppl and they recognize me. I hope they dont hate me... shoutout to the ppl on the phone lines,...

Version 11: TXL-LHR-HEL-LHR-JFK(overnight)-CLT-PIT-ORD-YYZ//YYZ-CLT-JFK-LHR-HEL-LHR-TXL (overnight and transfer from LHR to LCY not possible due to quarantine rules.)

With an itinerary as complex as this one, I feel there is little to be gained from phoning American Airlines every time they make a change.

My own approach is to wait until a couple of weeks before departure before phoning, and then sort everything out at once.

that's my lesson i'Ve learned. I didn't know at all that there isn't a timeframe in which you should become active. there is no silent approval to the changes AA made, when you didn't call in 4 6 8 weeks... you can wait until a couple of weeks before departure. lesson learned. and thanks for the input.

as a sidenote: what can be achieved is this: you can crawl in 300 miles steps from the original destination to a new, more convenient one.

i won't call that often anymore. I promise
