Welcome to the thread. This is a continuation of the highly popular 2018 Tier Point thread (found here). We keep track of other prices, as well as useful reference information for those planning tier point runs.

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

This is a community-maintained wiki post. Please add important information to it or correct outdated information by clicking the "Edit" button below.

A new guideline thread for TP meetups has been created on 31 March 2020. If you would like other members to join your TP, or if you want to organize a TP run with other members. Please visit there. From the first few posts over there you could see the active ( confirmed ) TP meetings and the links to their relevant discussion threads, connect with other members and learn the details about the run. Click here to access that thread.

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post 4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread (here), MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and return on Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Bit of wisdom/ pointers to options requested please:
I’ve got a SOF-LHR-DFW-KOA-DFW-LHR-SOF booked through AA for early Feb that is looking increasingly unlikely with all of the testing requirements (got an overnight in Dallas that makes pre-departure testing in LHR before the positioning flight too far out for Hawaii to accept on arrival)

Does anyone know where there’s a good summary of what refund/rebooking options with AA are as their info is more slanted to vouchers?
They’ve moved the trans Atlantic leg by more than 3 hours already so I think I could use that to trigger a refund as I booked on 7th April (foolishly thinking a year out would be safe...)
Any suggestions as to best course of action or options to try and salvage something good?

Having been burnt by rebooking/refund problems on other flights (I’m looking at you BA) I’m inclined towards simple refund and rebook later.
Any thoughts or help gratefully received

im not sure if 3 hrs will be enough for a cancellation. call them to verify...

otherwise: wait till first sunday of January (or first Sunday of December if travel is in the very very early Feb) till the AA schedule will be updated. with THAT itiniary very likely the will be disruption. if so, call, double check, prefunds.aa.com, wait a week. get your money.

I agree with Nephoi ,
American updates their domestic schedule monthly on the first Sunday of the previous month or the last Sunday 2 months before.
I am pretty sure that there would be updates and at least one your flights would be cancelled by 3 January 2021.

Well, this is annoying...

I received a notification of a schedule change and rebooking from AA. My GOT-LHR-JFK-LAX-HNL itinerary for next year has been rebooked as GOT-LHR-LAX-HNL, with longer layovers in LHR and LAX and a loss of 140 TPs. AA has advised me that this does not allow me to cancel for a refund because they are still getting me to HNL at the same time.

I guess I'll have to hope that BA cancels its Gothenburg flights to get the refund I'm looking for.

Any flight cancellation allows you to cancel and do a full refund, regardless of the timing of the flights you are rebooked on to. This is a clear requirement under EC261 which your cancelled LHR-JFK would be covered by.

Thanks.

I was pretty certain of that too, and I specifically told the agent that, but after a long period on hold while he consulted with his "support desk" he insisted that AA policy does not allow me to cancel for a refund.

Looks like I need to call again.

Please keep us posted as to what AA comes back to you with Hopefully it gets resolved!

The second agent I spoke to initially told me the same thing: that no refund was due because both the initial departure time and final arrival time were the same. I politely pushed back, mentioning EC261, and she put me on hold for a few minutes while she checked.

When she came back she said that I was, after all, entitled to a refund, although not because a flight was cancelled but because my arrival in LAX (en route) was 5 hours earlier than originally booked. She cancelled the itinerary, put a note on the booking and asked me to apply for the refund online.

I still think the reasoning is incorrect, and am a bit disappointed because I have always found AA agents to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful in the past, but seem to have got what I wanted in the end.

the reasoning is incorrect as you noted. any cancellation of a flight allows for cancelling of a booking for a full refund. as you say, you got a refund now at least.

If you are happy with the ticket price you have (and can afford to give AA a free loan) then I'd just wait until shortly before departure.
Chances are high there are additional changes/cancellations which give clear reasons to get a refund or rebooked.
I've rebooked/canceled half a dozen AA TATL tickets and it was a very smooth process. So much that even as GGL I prefer to deal with the AA Twitter team and booked some tickets on AA vs BA stock.

We may also destined for some AA calls .... as our current Feb return OGG- [140TP hops]-GOT has the JFK-LHR leg landing after the LHR-GOT final leg departs. That's a clear refund so I'm fine (still holding the tickets in the hope of the vaccine). But in the event of a cancel the BA positioning flights might have to be an FTV.
I hope you get sorted Glad you are sorted in a sensible way.

AA agents could be a hit or miss these days.
On some occasions, I needed to HUACA multiple times to get what I want.

Several travel websites have indicated that the USA has an intention to remove the Presidential Proclamation for Europe and Brazil in the upcoming days so this would mean that you might actually end up going to Hawaii with no restriction ( but a negative COVID test according to HA state rules ).
