What are Airport Upgrade Promotions?
- Airport Upgrade Promotions (AUPs) are offered on BA metal only, plus wet leases such as via Titan or Eastern
- AUPs grant immediate access to lounges, Fast Track, higher Priority Boarding and additional baggage for the immediately upcoming set of flights, but not for the return leg as well.
How can I get an AUP?
- AUPs are available to all passengers and most fare types, the key exception are non public fares, such as bulk fare
- They are subject to availability but don't be shy to ask, it's very little work for an agent to quote the fare (it's on the top of their screen) and not much more work to do the upgrade
- AUPs are only offered on the day of travel, there is no point asking beforehand.
- AUPs can be done in BA operated lounges and the First Wings at LHR T5 and JFK T7 - again subject to the agent having had the relevant training.
- AUPs are now widely available at check-in desks throughout the network - you just need FLY to be in operation
What else should I know about AUPs?
- Some check-in agents haven't been trained in how to do AUPs - there isn't a lot you can do about this at smaller locations\
- Basic (HBO) fares can have AUPs but the rate is usually higher than other tickets.
- AUPs are not available at LCY departures (apparently due to the the lack of a lounge and Fast Track)
- AUPs do give additional Tier Points and Avios, so long as the underlying ticket is a revenue ticket. That includes revenue tickets where Avios were use to part pay.
- A few locations don't use FLY, or rather use a sub-set of it (e.g. DBV, EGC).

If you are crediting to BAEC you will get the TPs and Avios on BA metal, regardless of the ticketing airline, and assuming it is a revenue ticket. So that should work ok for you, but you may need to retro-claim it and that may take time. I doubt the lounge staff will be able to give an informed answer to your question, so I wouldn't bother them about this.
For those crediting to non BAEC schemes but on BA metal, it's more complex. There are some reports of BA tickets crediting to (e.g.) AA at the higher amount. But strictly speaking if buying an AA or AY marketed ticket, you may need to assume you won't be credited anything extra, in line with their own policies in this area.

So in the end I went for an AUP on my flight to ARN on AY stock. Availability was very limited - they had to wait for a cancellation/no show to process it. As per usual it took about a week for AY to post the points, and I gave it a few days to see if BA would sync up then. In the end C-W-S was correct and I retro-claimed with BA for Missing TPs/Avios. They responded within 3 days, which I was impressed enough with.
As it happens, it was also one of the more pleasant CE flights I've had, so felt I got proper value from it this time.

AA flyer upgraded on BA flight
As we were boarding, the automatic gate ticket checkers wouldn't let us through, indicating that we needed to visit the gate agent. Thinking the worst, we trudged up to the agent... where we both (2) received complimentary upgrades to Club World for the LAX-LHR leg!
I have AA PlatPro, and thus OW Sapphire, but no BA status, didn't realize that we would even be in the running?! Very nice surprise. Now I've been looking for the priority thread, both in BA and AA forums... and on the BA website but no joy yet. And I'd certainly like to be in the know and repeat whatever we did right, going forward! Could anyone please link BA's prioritization of OW travelers for their international travel? Thanks!

with Aquarius presciently noted as follows: "A ticket slipped into a festive card could prove to be a winner."
So I would say it is unknowable, and you would be more likely to get an involuntary upgrade if you were BA Silver rather than oneworld Sapphire. But the reality is that BA sell the aircraft as much as a cabin within it, and if you are on a popular LAX service then it's quite normal for a big chunk of WTP to be brought forward. On a 787-8 sometimes the entire WTP cohort has to be squeezed into CW. Be assured it's not being done primarily for your benefit.

BA process upgrades through something called Discretionary Upgrade Tool (DUT), the details of which are deliberately unknowable to anyone outside of it. It appears to take into account many factors, including a random element. This means that its possible a traveller with no status can get an upgrade when a OWE does not....
In terms of what you can do, probably not very much beyond travel in oversold cabins!

Does anyone know if you can get an AUP quote before physically arriving at the airport? Also, is it straightforward getting an AUP for a leg of a trip when not at the origin airport. (Looking to upgrade LHR-KUL but departing from DUB)

I recently flew AMS-LHR-AUH and was trying to upgrade LHR-AUH. At the lounge at AMS, I was told the LHR-AUH upgrade was available, but I had to wait until I got to LHR to process it. And of course by the time I got there it was gone.

When I have asked about upgrading subsequent legs I have always been told that I can only ask at the departure airport for the leg in question.

Thanks, I’ve only got a couple of hours transfer time at LHR, where would I be able to process or enquire about an AUP? I’m debating going landslide once we arrive at LHR anyway, so guess that is one option to enquire at a checkin desk.

If you go landside, you certainly can ask at the check in desk. Airside, the BA customer service desk in T3 or T5, or in any of the lounges, can assist you.

Yes, there are several places you can check landside, and any staff member with a tablet or a white trolley can also check for you and then either process it directly or point you to someone else who can. If you go airside (which from DUB doesn't make sense unless your KUL flight is less than an hour away) then you can check at the Customer Service desks to the right of Flight Connections, or you can check first at the Flight Connection checkpoint and go to the desks if there is availability. Finally once inside T5 you can check at the main customer service desks by gates 10 and 13, there are usually signs up promoting AUPs, or if you already have lounge access in Galleries South Customer Service desk, to the left of the entry desks.

If you're transferring from an EI flight into T2 and going landside, I'd suggest getting the Tube unless you've got the Heathrow Express timetable handy. It's a bit quicker and less walking from T2.
Of course if HAL got their act together on airside transfers - the T2 <-> T5 buses seem to always be 10 mins away! - then it would be an obvious choice

Disappointed! Got quoted a price of just £375 to AUP upgrade CW->F on BA123 but then they refused to sell me it as no-one had booked F on the flight and so they have closed the service! I will ask again in the lounge in case they change their mind, but didn’t expect that!
