Avios upgrade - what am I doing wrong?

Avios upgrade - what am I doing wrong?

It has just taken me 48 minutes to process an Avios upgrade by phone. I called 020 8707 4487. I went through the "other" menu. I went through endless authentication with the first agent (it's easier to talk to my bank than BA these days). That took ages. She eventually established there was availability on one sector (at the beginning of the call there had been availability on both, but what the hey). She then transferred me to someone else because she couldn't actually do the upgrade. The second person took forever. Lots of being put on hold. Lots of calculating and processing. All in, the bones of an hour. I've no idea why I can never do these online (the route is PEK-LHR or LHR-PEK, but whichever sector I'm upgrading it won't play online - the tickets are always originating in PEK - is that why?). Is there a better number to call as a humble silver card holder? Is there a better menu option to press? Is there any other way to do this without spending an hour on the phone?

The mostly likely explanation based on my experience is you have bought a Dual Inventory Fare which seems to create epic challenges when trying to MFU.
