I too have had this coming back from Dubai to London, over a year ago. There are signs saying no cable longer than 1m unless clearly personal use. I was out there building Data Cantre so was taking spare power cords back with me which we 2m to 5m long, all were taken from me.

I had a problem on Emirates. The female Security Agent plucked my luggage scales out of my carry-on, reeled out a tiny tape measure that I did not even know existed, tore it off when extended to full length, and handed the scales back to me.

Back in late 2014, I had a 6-plug extension in my hand luggage flagged in Doha going back to Riyadh from Abu Dhabi. Told at security screening that it wasn't allowed in my hand luggage, despite the fact I had flown with Air Arabia from Sharjah to Astana and Almaty to Dubai on Air Astana within the previous week. The only way I managed to not surrender it was the fact I told them I had a mere hour in transit and was returning to Riyadh. So seems like it hasn't been a recent thing.

Are they confiscating belts longer than 1m as well?

Yet another reason for me never to visit or transit through Dubai again.
Honestly I have really hated it each time I've been there. It's not the UAE as a whole I have a downer on - loved my trips to Abu Dhabi and Muscat and would go back to either in a heartbeat... but I just find the whole Dubai experience underwhelming and the flights seem to have a higher than usual DYKWIA count

Hmmm, if I am caught with some long cables, do you think they’d let me off for personal use if I had some BDSM photos on my phone? They are, after all, a tolerant bunch over there

I can't understand why at Dubai when landing there, you go through security and any liquids over 100mls are confiscated, which is what you'd expect. But then you are in a secure area, fill up a water bottle and then they confiscate when you get pulled aside for screening at the gate! This was on QF heading to London. So glad they don't fly through there anymore.
