Things have changed in those 3 years, Moscow is now 3 times a day on a midhaul A321, two to DME and one to SVO. No 777s, 747s or 787s currently.

Cant decide between NY or Moscow to use our 2for1 ticket. We will have to buy an additional seat for our little un so that kinda puts F out of the question.

The CW on A321 is a great seat; one of you could take a 'throne' seat and the other could sit with your child in a two-er.
Also, I believe it prices as a Reward Flight Saver, so comparatively cheap next to a TATL in terms of taxes and charges.

Depending on your nationalities, just a small warning to make sure you check the visa requirements and costs for Russia. Brits definitely need a visa and last time I checked also needed to be fingerprinted in either London or Edinburgh.

Currently the A321 with CW seating. Really enjoyed the flight last month, found the seats really comfortable and the service was great. Cabin crew suggested avoiding the monday morning / friday evening flights as these were usually full. As mentioned above, very reasonable too - £35 plus (I think) 70k avios return on a RWS. The only gamble is if BA make an op change to the standard CE aircraft.
Moscow is an amazing city and one Mrs Row9 and I intend to visit again. Clearly, Moscow and NY are very different from each other, but we would choose Moscow every time (despite the considerable visa faff).

When I was poking around with flight search, it looked to me that after 31st March the DME route will be flown with 787s again with an F cabin. Maybe some seasonal variation?
My visa expires at the end of February though

The political problems involving expelling diplomats has also affected getting a Russian visa. The period for the normal time visa has gone up from a few days to twenty. No problem there if you have the time but if you are using your passport or have it with another country for their visa you start to run out of time. This means you need to pay for the accelerated service at additional cost.
Mind you, when you arrive the Russian immigration queues are much quicker and the officers polite, which can be different from the American experience!

Interesting to note that Moscow has been visited by 2 wide-body BA aircraft already this year, presumably due to a lack of serviceable mid-haul A321s.
777 G-ZZZA did the daytime DME rotation on 03 Jan while G-VIIC did the daytime SVO rotation on 07 Jan. All Moscow rotations in winter are booked to be A321s.
Several other rotations have been subbed by short-haul aircraft but the visit to SVO is notable and perhaps the first wide-body BA aircraft to visit since the airline previously stopped flying there in 2003.
