Next Revenue Generator - Pay for Status [speculation, not fact]

coming soon?

Seems to be a big thing on legacy US carriers - I'd suggest this will be announced in 2019.

Hasn't this been around with American for a while? And that said, I don't think everyone is eligible for such pay ups.

I'd frankly be surprised if BA does this.

I dont think so, the american carriers also have upgrades as a part of their benefits and no lounge access for north american flights (excl JFK-LAX/SFO), BA has not done any of these!

I don’t see BA offering this. They operate a very different model to the US carriers.

The US has a different model for status benefits - even lounge access on domestic flights is an annual subscription if I'm not mistaken. I'd argue that the BAEC is extremely effective in driving irrational behaviour around carrier choice and price sensitivity. I can't imagine they'll be in a hurry to change it much.

Incidentally I think you can already buy OW status via S7 on a monthly basis.

Am sure BA have looked at this before and saw very little benefit to it.

If they had they would have implemented it by now.

This, I couldn't agree more. I haven't flown non-OW in ages, unless it made a significant detour, made no sense to fly OW, or wasn't available.

That's interesting. Couldn't see anything obvious on the S7 website about it though.

Isn't this exactly what a TP run is?

It only appears on the Russian language version.

Why not credit card spending as a status contributer... this seems to be becoming more common across hotel and airline loyalty programs...

in the US the VS credit card gives / used to give (think it may have ended) you TPs for reaching a certain level of spending each month but this was restricted to a maximum you could earn not only per month but also in a year so you were still expected to fly a reasonable amount to reach even VS silver let alone gold

But, to me, some of the US schemes seem overly complicated where you may reach the $$ spend but not the mileage/ segment requirement.

Call me old fashioned but I'm a believer in earning status by actually flying!

Yesssss ... more holidays, with Creative Routings!

I don’t really get excited about the 2-way street mentality, BUT if I fly BA (or OW partners) enough then I receive ‘recognition’ for doing that.

Any idea of ‘purchased’ status is, IMO, ludicrous. Corporates could uplift their executives as a bonus, or just routinely, for a modest outlay. The Lounges would be ‘standing room only’ for everyone, and consider the howls of protest here!

BAEC is a funny old British thing, which has evolved sensibly, Leave it alone!

I think the missus has a certain bank card which comes with AR/Skyteam status thrown in. As you get sod all from banks here for free I suspect she has to pay a fee for it....which amounts to the same thing.
