Fuel Dumping: the basics

“Fuel Dumping” is the term generally given to when an aircraft disposes fuel mid-air prior to landing. This often occurs when a plane is forced to make a landing short of its intended destination to lighten the aircraft’s weight. However, there is another more secretive meaning to the term “Fuel Dumping”. It involves intentionally pairing two separate flights on the same airfare ticket in the hope that the fuel surcharge component of the main, more-expensive flight is either partially or fully dumped/eliminated. Have a read of this previous blog post to gain a better understanding of the fuel surcharge component and why it exists. We will now go through the basics of “Fuel Dumping” which will help you better understand this practice and the steps needed to successfully achieve a “dump”. Please note, this article is strictly for educational purposes only. Here are the stages needed to make a successful dump:

I did actually
Full avios/tier points for the diversion sector LHRJNB . Flight was delayed 24hrs and operated with the same crew down to JNB as BA9055 the following evening. I managed to AUP onto the following days BA55 and snagged myself another load of Avios and tier points for that sector. In addition to EC261 there were also "ex-gratia service recovery" Avios in my account when I logged on to my account at the hotel without me even asking. This was in the pre-Cruz cutback days. Not sure it would happen now.

I think the fine people of the village of Grendon Underwood will be a little annoyed by now with the a380 circling above them. Not sure how noisy it will be flying at 13.000 ft / 4.000 m...

Looks like it’s inbound to Heathrow as it’s stopped it’s circling.

They’re now in the Bovingdon stack, which must be annoying having just done 10 loops on the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire border

Sensationalism indeed. Sadly, the headline, "Flight deck crew correctly obey the semicircular rule" is unlikely to sell papers.
