Ba 1039 lhr-pek

Has anyone taken this flight recently with its ungodly 04.50 arrival? Just wondering if it’s worth booking the hotel for the night before, otherwise if the room isn’t ready it’s a long long wait to check in. Finnair isn’t much better (closer to 8am) and Cathay is round the houses - and doesn’t earn AAdvantage miles in the cheaper fare classes. Better arrival times (lunchtime) on LH, OS et al, but a completely different alliance.

Are you talking about the BA39? In which case yes, I have taken it but I'm sure it arrives mid morning?

Can’t remember any BA flight to PEK I have taken arriving at crazy hours. Just checked the timetable and it still arrives at 0930 today...

My apologies it appears on Friday departures the flight is numbered BA1039 and arrives at 4 in the morning. Anyone know why this is?

Hi,

For 6 days a week ( looking at early Nov) the flight BA 039 does arrive at PEK at 1025 but for the Friday the flight number is 1039 and it does arrive at 0450.

Regards

TBS

PS Sorry I was typing at the same time as you!

Annoyingly I have to travel on the Friday!

It's to avoid having two flights with the same number arriving or departing on the same day. You have to look at local time at origin, local time at destination and UTC to see which is the problematic one.

If its miles that you require for AA, possibly consider PVG, then either train or cheap flight to PEK.

For those who are puzzling about the phrase "taken this flight recently", an 0450 arrival is not the current schedule for BA39. This comes in with the northern winter schedule that begins on Sunday 28 October 2018.

And for those who want to see the theory in action, this is I think a typical week, with the problematic clashes bolded:-

Enlightening post on the scheduling technicalities! Thanks!

labdoctor Oct 11, 2018 12:40 pm

Does anyone know why Fridays are singled out for this arrangement though? I suppose there must be a reason, otherwise they could just schedule it at the same time irrespective of what day it is.

adrianlondon Oct 11, 2018 12:44 pm

I'd ask hotels you're interested in whether they have an option for a room to be available from e.g. 8am.

I remember once arriving early in HK (not 8am type early though!) and whilst the hotel wouldn't let us have our room really early (I didn't think to ask in advance) they did say we could use the gym and their changing room/showers to freshen up and get changed. That's all we needed.

OP you will be fine. Most hotels in Beijing are pretty relaxed about check in time, unless there is a major event in town. By the time you cleared passport and custom etc, you will be at landside 6ish. Add an hour at least for getting to downtown so that’s 7am already.

On a recent trip to Beijing, one of my group arrived on a flight around the same time (4-5am) and had no issue getting in to their room early at the Peninsula when they arrived at around 6am...called ahead before the flight and was told it was easy to accommodate.

DIRECT MERIT Oct 11, 2018 1:55 pm

Great, I’ll contact the hotel. The arrival into PEK is barely mid-evening in the UK, so a few hours’ sleep after what’s basically a daytime flight from LHR feels key!
