I try to sit by the window on the right hand side when returning to Heathrow. If we are landing to the west and the weather is clear I can usually pick out my house.

On long haul flights or flights in the morning or evening I pay some attention to the sun direction. In essence I don’t want to open the window blind and be blinded by the sun - especially after an overnight flight. Also when travelling to North America I tend to go for a northern facing seat to see, possibly, more of Greenland and inland Canada.

You should try it. It's a very fine thing indeed.

My left eye is my dominate eye so I prefer to sit in a portside window seat. If my wife and I are traveling together we still seem to pick port but she gets the window.

Usually always the port side (so A) just out of habit.

I sit on the opposite side when flying into London Heathrow or London City in case we get an approach with views.

Always the A side landing into Dublin as that's the side showing the city.

I really don't mind as long as I have a window for short haul and an aisle for long long hauls.

For flights into LHR I try to get a starboard seat for the chance of some city viewing, on other daylight flights, I try to figure out the shadow side and on the rest of flights I don't care.

Apparently the starboard aisle (on wide-bodies) usually has less foot traffic, so I prefer that side. Not sure if this is scientifically-proven though...

Short haul always go for seat delta. Force of habit, but the reason I tell myself is when sat in 8/9 (average ET divider point) I can usually see when they open the door so I know when to get up.
