BA adds Osaka from March 2019 [Confirmed]

According to Japanese media, BA will add Osaka KIX from March 19, 2019. This will be a four-times a week service.

Osaka gets its first direct flight to London in 10 years after Japan Airlines withdrew the route.

Source: Nikkei

Side note: also good for BA-Japan Airlines-Finnair-Iberia joint venture between Europe and Japan giving [passengers so many more options to fly, mix and match

Great! The question is if it happens, will it go any better for BA than Chengdu?

Very few Japanese seem to be interested in flying BA so I imagine it will be heavily relying on enough Brits going to Osaka rather than Japanese coming to London.

Well not only AY, but AL, KL, and LH manage it, with many transit passengers from the UK. In addition to the business traveller market, it's a region that's a more obvious tourist destination than Chengdu, and can be visited without a visa. Personally, I'm more concerned about the absence of a First Class lounge, but I imagine that's a more niche concerned. At the very least, they'll be able to serve it for 10 days until 29 March...

I would expect a 788/789 destination from T3 with lot of connecting trafic from VIE/PRG/BCN

I would be quite excited about this prospect as I am planning a trip to the Far East and want to travel between Osaka and Tokyo on the train - it was looking tricky previously - this would help things no end!

Arren't those routes already well served by Finnair though? (Not suggesting that people will want to do two connections via T3, but they already have one-stop options on One World).

Hi,

I too like this proposal (Osaka/Kyoto are on my to do list as I have been to Tokyo 5 times but never made it out of Tokyo). An open jaw (into Osaka and out of Tokyo ) on BA is now attractive.

Regards

Great! Although I wonder if this will be short lived to cover Rugby and Olympics only??
Do you think we will get nice overnight flights like the JAL evening service to HND, or more likely a daytime departure similar to BA’s current Tokyo services?

Excellent news if true. I flew the route frequently with JAL until it ended. JL421/422 if my memory serves me correctly. I suspect they will start it with a 788. Osaka will have high business demand but premium traffic tends to be Tokyo-centric.

Oh that would be great news! Made that trip a couple of times on CX via HK and it's not much fun.

Isn't T3 all 744/A32X?

I agree probably 788, but most likely out of T5.
