Safety issue with gate check bags?
 
just a thought occurred as I’m standing with my usual bag full of electrics. Power banks etc. I’m also watching people hand over large cabin bags for gate checking .

Now , if you are only allowed certain things in hand luggage because of the safety risk of being on the hold, how can airlines check in these bags without a screen for these power banks?

surely gate checking is a safety issue or are they screened before being placed in the hold?

PS: not a rant, just curious.

As crew (when/if we need to offload bags) we have a list of items not suitable for being placed into checked bags, i.e. laptops, power banks, passports medication etc. The ground staff will also have the same list and should be asking if the bag contains any of these items, if it does they need to be removed from the bag before it is placed into the aircraft hold.

Almost all carriers make such an announcement and ask when they tag the bag. Some of the items are prohibited and others are about warning people off a dumb mistake.

If FT is a slice of life, which it is not, there are still any number of rants from people who place medications, laptops and passports into bags they check at a counter (rather than absent-mindedly sending their bag off at the gate).
