Crazy upgrade price!

I have just bought a last minute city break through BA holidays to Stockholm worked out about 170PP for 2 nights in a 4 star with breakfast! Bargain! So I thought I would use some of the avios I have been accumulating to get to CE, I have called BA and was given a quote of £800 to change the ticket to a qualifying class of ticket then the standard avios for upgrade!

Where do these prices come from!

Last time I upgraded to CE on a BA city break it cost £89!

The £89 you have previously been offered sounds like a POUG (promotional upgrade); you may be offered one of these online from 48 hours after booking up to OLCI.

The £800 you are being quoted is likely to change your ET ticket to a semi-flexible or fully flexible fare bucket that can then be upgraded to CE with Avios. At that price it's likely to be a fully flexible bucket.

Upgrading with Avios from ET or WT is generally a poor use of Avios, because as you have discovered the ET/WT sectors have to be in expensive booking classes! WTP to CW or CW to F is much better use, because even the cheapest WTP/CW fare buckets can be upgraded.

There is certainly availability so will just wait to see if I am offered a POUG! I Have a few other flights booked at the end of the year with Qatar/Malaysian airlines and Cathay Pacific which I canít use avios to upgrade.

Thanks for your swift reply!

Generally when booking a BA holiday flight and hotel, POUGs are never offered! (In my experience)

however at the airport maybe possible. Get there early

Agreed. Pretty sure that's always true - no POUGs on BA holidays bookings.
