Club Europe Catering Guide - September 2018 onwards

This thread outlines the new arrangements for Club Europe catering introduced on Wednesday 12 September 2018 based on 5 bands (Express, and Bands 1-4). The main information piece - in terms of timings and the distance zones for the meals can be found in post 1. The following cross references the photos below against the matrix of options. In addition to the photos, some FTers have written extensively on their experiences so there is more to this thread than the pictures. Also note that the menus for LGW routes rotate monthly, whereas LHR routes rotate bi-weekly

Please keep this thread clear for for reviews, menu descriptions, and photos. For chat about the new service arrangements there is a dedicated thread has now been set up for this Club Europe catering opinions and general discussion

Please do not quote photos in this thread.

The previous shorthaul catering guide for Sunday 26 March 2017 to Tuesday 11 September 2018 is now locked, but is to be found here.

Numbers relate to the post number. Vegetarian means the alternative option provided as standard rather than the special meals. The pre-ordered special meals are AVML (Asia-vegetarian), CHML(children meal), DBML (diabetic meal), GFML (gluten free), HNML (Hindu non-vegetarian meal), KSML (Kosher meal), LCML (low calorie meal), LFML (low fat meal), NLML (low-lactose meal), LSML (low salt meal), MOML (Muslim meal), VGML (vegan meal), and VLML (lacto-ovo vegetarian).

There are differences between the offering in/out of LHR, LGW, and BA CityFlyer routes operated from LCY, STN, BRS, BHX, MAN, EDI, and DUB. For BA CityFlyer flights please refer to this guide created by eJetter BA CityFlyer catering guide

I'd much rather have tepid food (which is still cooked as no actual 'cooking' happens on-board) presented nicely, or even OK, than those burnt tide marks, they disproportionately grind my gears.

Sounds lovely, but is the small bowl of Tesco Express feta-stuffed mini-pepper up to such ceremony? 🧐

Of course not - the old Long Band starters were almost as big as the current Band 1/2/3/4 salad mains!

And they were enhanced away, in favour of the current epicurean delights, in the name of saving £0.05 no doubt.

Do the menu changes have a fixed date at the start of the month?

I've got a band 3 on 2nd November so will get some pics if it appears to be new.

I think it's fortnightly on a Wednesday, but stand to be corrected

Dear One - if I served you a Tesco starter (assuming that I had ever set foot in a Tesco since graduating to solid food) you'd have more ceremony than a coronation. I promise.

As to burn marks on the side of the plates - I long ago learned that what matters is what the plates hold not what they look like. I became an Automatic long ago - no gear shifting for me!

We'll just have to differ - I am off out to dinner XXX

Surly it could be designed such that it comes on a tray or in bag, that sits in the current dish. The dish is then still heated with the meal as is now and then food transferred out onto dish at service. No additional storage required, just a small amount of extra rubbish, but worth it for the better presentation.

I think that would prove complicated - I like the idea but am uncertain that it could be done with what is available? Have you seen Galley equipment? - it was probably designed to feed the Wright Brothers

We eat with our eyes, non?

And please don’t tell me you’re not julienning, flambéing and quenelling for your candlelit suppers! A lady so debonair, I won’t have it.

What are the current thoughts on the best choice between Ploughman's or Afternoon tea? I have successfully avoided band 2 1400 - 1700 flights for a while, but have no option early next month.

Ploughman's looks better judging by the wiki photos.

Hilarious MAD-LHR in Club flight this week. 14 rows (!) on the 321 and a 1.35hr (!) flight time. We were in the exit row 10 and received our meal just as the we started the decent, no choice only roast lamb avail...lots of grumbling. Trays still being collected and crew running up and the done the aisle as the gear came down..row 14 only had about 5 mins with their meal before it was taken away. Crew appeared to have no idea the flight was shorter than normal due to very strong winds yet the captain had made an announcement in Madrid - just seemed sloppy and unprofessional. Worth an email for no meal choice?

Personal choice depending on your love of cheap carbs, but Ploughman's for me. The LHR version is better quality than its LGW sibling.

I have tried pretty much every SPML in an attempt to avoid sandwiches for afternoon tea flights, the result being an ever more depressing succession of sandwiches. The nadir was reached with AVML afternoon tea, and I have now given up. If I have to fly band 2 during these times in CE (and I will avoid wherever possible), it's Ploughman's or I won't bother eating.

Having had both last week I would go with the Ploughman’s since the afternoon tea sandwiches seem to have declined in quality since the catering refresh. I also happen to like scotch eggs (note that the Gatwick version has a small piece of sausage roll instead of the Scotch egg). I was offered both bread and a scone with my meal - the jam and cream was already loaded on the tray.
