At the airport means the day of travel and thus the operating, not the ticketing carrier, ought to be able to do anything to any ticket.
My only caution is that if one has BA reissue the ticket, upon landing, make certain with AA that it shows that you flew the flight in question lest AA believe that you did not and then cancel any remaining segments of the ticket. While this can all be worked out, it can take forever.
