Aircraft from CPT to LHR v from DUR or JNB

Why does JNB get new aircraft (380s), DUR get new aircraft (787s) and poor old CPT has to make do with old 747s. I do the CPT - LHR a lot and I love the 747 but it is really shabby now! Just wondering!

CPT can't handle a 380 but BA want the biggest capacity possible as it's a very profitable route so 747 is only option. Unfortunately the passenger mix is best suited to the mid J configuration which are the shabby old ones. Not certain what will happen when the 747's go, presumably a 773 or 77x.

Or an A350-1000, which have been bought as jumbo replacements.

The runway extension has been approved after so objections, and the work is meant to start in 2019 for completion in 2020 so it can handle the A380, but on current plans there is only 1-A380 compatible gate. With only 1-A380- gate BA/Emirates will have to adjust their schedules, as in the Northern Winter BA arrives around 11:00 and Emirates at 11:30 and in the evening Emirates departs at 18:00 and 20:00, and BA at 17:30

We will see. Assuming that both airlines want to use A380 it may come down to who is the better negotiator leaving the other doing the Reg Varney.

I thought I read EK was going to 3x daily to Cape Town. Amazing if they could fill 3 x A380 but you never know.
