I've got the choice of 789 or 777 back from GRU in F - I was leaning towards the 789 - smaller cabin, newer plane/cabin, but reading some of this thread suggests the 777 would be better - is that right?

Having promised my other half the chance to dine like this in First I had the experience of doing the buddy seat on the 787-9. You can dine together but it is cramped and uncomfortable as you have to sit on the ottoman. But the crew were happy to help. However at the end of the meal the seat belt sign came on and as there's no seat belt for the non-buddy seat it meant coffee and chocolates were done side-by-side.

This one is personal preference. I think 777 F is deeply underwhelming and much prefer the added privacy and newness of the 789 but others seem to find the smaller cabin to feel a bit claustrophobic, as well as citing the lack of buddy seat and single loo on the 789. I think the only way to definitively answer this question is to try them both and work out what you value.

All my flights in F have been on the A380 and loved every single one of them. I’ve been happy with every seat 2A/K, 3A/K and in 2E with my wife in 2F
However next week I’ll be on my first non A380 flight in F when my wife and I are on a 777 from SAN-LHR in 2E and 2F.
I’m looking forward to trying F in another aircraft and hopefully it’s not too much of a letdown after the A380
On our recent flight to SFO on the A380 my wife used the ‘buddy seat’ to dine together and we loved it. Here’s a photo I took :

I might be the odd one out but I really dislike the 787 F cabin. The giant monstrosity of a screen staring you in the face and restricting the space is really ruining what would otherwise be a great seat for me. The lack of a buddy seat isn't great either, nor is the single washroom. As for the A380 the seat area is bigger and has a lot of extra storage but the seat itself is the same and the ambiance and finish isn't nearly as nice as on the 747 or 777.
B747 > B777 > A380 > B787 for me.
B747 > B777 > A380 > B787 for me.

A380>B777=B787>B747 for me, mostly travelling solo.
Still can’t completely make my mind up about where I place the 787 F, though I do like being able to use the IFE during take off and landing, and don’t usually have a need for the buddy seat. If I have to be on a 744, I would take 2A/K, though the 1A/K experience is something to try once.

There are buddy seats on the 787-9, they've just very tight. With the table out it's a painful experience with the screen in your back. Outside of meal times if you just want to sit with someone for five minutes then it's fine.
